My dealer says 15-40 shell rotella is all they use (I just checked my email from him again to be sure). I picked up a large pail full at Canadian Tire when it was on sale 25% off a few months back.
It's on sale now at crappy tire. 25% off. Problem is, they only have 5w40 in rotella synthetic according to the website.
You have a heated shop I believe? I'd never run 15W40 in the winter without that. I put in 5W40 rotella in my 50 hour change and that's all I'll use year round from now on. Its better for cold starts and better for high engine temps too, so for the price difference on sale I get it. T5 10W30 rotella is another good oil too for cold weather starts and will be fine for anything you can do on your lot. It's on sale now at crappy tire. 25% off. My recollecton is that Rotella comes in at least three flavors for diesel engines. Regular Rotella which is straight dino oil. Rotella as a mix or blend of dino and synthetic and then the full synthetic which is called???T6. There may be a few other blends as well.
They are all rated for diesel and IMO all fine for use in our engines. I started with regular Rotella and then used the blend for a change or two. My last oil change was with the full synthetic Rotella because it was what was on sale at the auto parts store. I recall it was less than $20/gal on sale.
My issue now is whether to extend my change interval as I am using full synthetic this time. I may just change the filter at the regular interval.
I would keep to schedule on filters..
