Circular paver driveway

Don, you and Ron are quite the team. That finished section with the drain looks great. I hope you have enough pavers to make it all the way. I'm surprised that Acme didn't at least try to come up with a solution. How about Pavestone? Do they have anything even remotely close in color and size?

   / Circular paver driveway #122
Robert I called Acme today they said the 10,000 pavers I bought from them 3 years ago were the last of the inventory of those pavers from all their different locations. With the economy the way it was they shut down 8 plants. They have no more and cannot make anymore.

Perhaps finalizing/modifying the plan should come sooner rather than later.
Regardless of how well you protect the layed pavers, there will be some that become damaged or discolored over time. What I am suggesting is that you hold some of your existing inventory back for future repairs.
That gives you the best chance of making a repair that isn't an ugly looking
patch that sticks out like a sore thumb. Even then, if you don't seal the ones that are layed while they are new, and make a sealed " take up reserve patio"
behind the barn somewhere that is exposed to the elements of the spares, you won't get an unobserveable blend.
You might be able to find another company that makes pavers super close in color, size, shape and texture, but I kinda like Dennis's idea of designing a family crest, if your family doesn't all ready have one that you can copy.
When I first mentioned sealing you countered with something like, " this is a working farm, so we don't worry about some stains."
All the blood, sweat, tears, and sore knees, to get the great looking finished project, has made it much more valuable in your mind, as it should...
I'd be letting the air out of Ron Hall's tires and feeding him anything he wants to keep him around to help a little longer:)

here is a good picture of where we are.

You can see the beginning of section 1 and the end of section 4.

I have enough pavers for only 3/4 of the remaining curbed in area.

The other picture is the stack of pavers I have left.

A decision will have to be made shortly on which stretching method to use and have it not look like a stretching method.:D

You could get a dark paver and make two Big arrows showing the direction of travel,
or as you are filling it in start to put in a fade, where you use pavers of different colors to transition to a different color.

I just need to come up with some type of design. I'll take a picture of the area of concern, so you can see the shape we have to work with and post it later. If I go with mosaics, I'm thinking more in the lines of nature (animals, trees) or farming (tractor), the theme of this rural Texas area, or a large Texas design.

Another option would be cement in the middle with a sidewalk wide boarder of pavers, on the last outside parts of the Q that nicely tie everything together.

Thank you for your ideas.

I would stay with either a "Texas" theme, or a "wildlife" theme, only because of resale later, a bit more ambidextrous.

What I highlighted in Red, makes perfect since, clean but similar, add a 2-3' Texas shape in the center, maybe in Gold or Silver color, that would look nice! If a Brass medallion was a possibility, that would look awesome.

I would take 2 or 3 of your pavers to some stores, including HD & Lowe's, & see if they have anything close to matching, & if they do, buy enough, bring them home & randomly mix them in with your remaining originals so they blend in as much as possible.

A couple of pics from the sidewalk lay.
The driveway pavers are on the porch at the bottom part of the last photo.

How many pavers did you use on the sidewalk? Can you pull them to get enough to finish the driveway and then put a different color or style in for the sidewalk?

I'm very nervous about a pattern or something artsy to make up the difference. They either come out amazing, or incredibly odd looking. Sadly, most of the time, it's pretty bad.

While ACME has told you that there are no more pavers, and I have no reason to not believe them, have you called each store individually to see if this is true? Or to see if they have sold to places with some inventory?

I had a job a couple of years ago requiring a Mexican Adobe brick. They where a lite tan shade that had to be just right for the job. I needed 2,000 bricks and was only able to find 500 locally. The people at ACME Brick here in Tyler gave me a list of brick suppliers in the DFW area that might have more. I called a dozen of them and half of them said that they might have what I wanted in their yard, but I would have to come and see for myslef. I was able to find the remaining 1,500 bricks in three different yards. It took a full day, and I paid a bit more for them then there then I did in Tyler, plus burning gas, but that's just part of what it takes sometimes.

Well that's a bummer. I've been bit like that before. It's a main reason I always try to buy all the materials I will need at once. Now if I could only make myself buy enough EXTRA at the same time so I have spares, cover problems/things I forgot/broken parts/etc...

But it sure is looking really nice!

Today we finished section 4. YEA!
We hand tamped the pavers, recheck all the spaces, elevation and replaced a few that cracked. We then poured polymer sand and swept it in the spaces, hand tamped it all again to set the sand and re-swept it and then misted it.

Eddie

Eddie the sidewalk pavers are different and not rated for vehicle traffic. The ones by the front porch and the side porch are the driveway pavers but will not be removed.

beepington, will do. Last time I checked they were not rated for vehicle traffic, but that was a few years ago.

I'll check a few different sources like you did to see what I can find.

On to section 5 solo again, It was fast and fun for short time, Thanks Ron!

I see what looks to be at least 4 unique colors in your mix. Your bound to find at least one of those colors that you could buy more of someplace else & randomly mix them into your originals, no? Or are yours of unique dimensions?

beepington, they are unique, they are cut to require a 1/4" space between each paver - they do not touch because of non tapered ends. They are also clay not cement and they are 1/2" thicker than most pavers.

One final dumb thought from me. . . Have you thought of craigslist? You might post your needs on craigslist for the specific paver in the Austin/Bryan areas. With all the housing explosion in Round Rock and Georgetown, you just might get lucky. A picture of your driveway could be added. It's a needle in a haystack, but it doesn't cost anything.

Okay, one double-final dumb idea. . . You might add a compass rose in the Q-section. It would normally be in the center, but I doubt Karen would let you cut down that tree.

Sigh. . .:ashamed: Third dumb idea. . . Instead of a compass rose, do a big circle with a "B" in the middle.

I'm going to use some of Ron's and TBN suggestions.

I like the idea of a compass rose.

Today I counted pavers to get an exact (+ - 5) count.

There are 3835 pavers left and I have 90 feet of driveway left. section dividers will leave 88'. The drive is exactly 29 pavers wide and 3 pavers long covers 2 feet. That means I need 3828 pavers to complete the "O" only. I do not have enough for the slash in the Q. At my count I will be 7 pavers over.

To stretch a few I will put a 8'X20' cemented car wash pad next to the golf cart porte-cochere. It will be boarded by pavers on each side along with the slash of the Q to tie things together. I'll buy extra pavers for the compass rose which I will frame the boarders into the cement.

Below is a crude drawing. Green is cement red is pavers.

Thanks for all the suggestions, if you have any more now is the time.

Don,
Been busy replacing some floors in the house. I was going to suggest to add more concrete dividers. But you hit the nail on the head with the 8x20 wash pad.

NEW PLAN! I found clay pavers.

Since Acme Brick (clay paver plant) shut down I was short on pavers to finish the drive. I just could not get enthused about pouring cement on the drive so I took out on a quest. I first went to Paverstone's manufacturing plant in San Marcus and they made only cement pavers, the right size and color but the texture was different. They referred me to Claymex in New Braunfels and there they were. They are making a batch for me this week!

// Claymex //

On the first photo the three on the right are Pavestone and on the left Claymex, I'll be getting the the top two on the left the lower third one is too orange.

On the second photo the two colors of Claymex pavers are on top of Acme pavers.

On third photo section 5 and 5.5 the one I'm prepping the drive for pavers now. (5.5 is a second exit/entrance ramp on the circular drive.)

Congratulations on finding a suitable substitute for the original pavers. This has been a huge project and I admire your strength to move all of those bricks. Using the Claymex weight of 4.6 per brick you will have moved over 30 tons of bricks literally brick by brick. Good job. Rick

Good find Don. Are you going mix the Claymex bricks in with the Acme bricks.
