A New Rule?

It would be nice if all you had to do is move the mouse pointer over the tractor model and data such as weight, PTO HP, years built would magicaly appear. :D

hitting a site like tractor data will give you basic semi-reliable info on about 98% of tractors out int he last 100 ys...

takes seconds to look.. that's all..

:)

A skilled writer would weave that information into his post to better communicate his point and define his questions but some of us only took English in high school because it was required and Lisa Lou sat one row over and looked soDAMgood in those denim miniskirts.
I agree that if you don't know the tractor mentioned off the top of your head you might not be the best reader to offer advice about it but, for those that are reading trying to learn about tractors before they buy them it would be easier to have the OP stick that info in the first line and save fifty visits to tractor data.com.
You could put it into a facts bracket (JD5045E/45/39/6500) etc. but new readers would have to have it explained to them and some of the nit picky people might have quite a time debating the proper way to post those numbers and which numbers to count. Base machine vs as ballasted vs including loader and back hoe weight vs including ballast box on 3PH. and on and on.

Imagine the puzzlement on my face the first time I suggested to a teenager that he look up something in a reference book like an encyclopedia and he replied that he would just "Google it"!!
It is a great thing but not as all knowing as they think it is.

. but instead of berating a user asking a question who may be new himself.. is it really so hard to lookup a tractor and perhaps learn soemthing in the process?

besides.. tisco probably likes the traffic.. :)

Somehow I knew this would go over like a lead balloon.
Engine or PTO HP will tell you more about a machine than any other single pc of info, IMHO.

No, it's a good idea. For some reason, where I grew up, a tractor's model number wasn't nearly as referenced as its engine size. Rather, when you asked someone what kind of tractor they had, they'd reply "It's about a 60hp John Deere" or "It's a 100hp Case" and so on. They wouldn't necessarily mention the model but rather the engine power of the tractor in describing it to you. If someone had a "four wheel drive" tractor......then you automatically knew it was a big ag tractor with at least 200hp.

I agree referencing PTO HP would be great as that is the standard that tractors are graded by. However, as mentioned above, with today's tractors and all of the variations in weights and sizes as compared to 30-40 years ago, that can be a little misleading too.

We need a code to go with the new rule. The code would be similar to that used for fertilizer (and with good reason).
1st # - HP
2nd # - PTO HP
3rd# - Base machine
4th # - ballasted
5th # - including loader and back hoe weight
6th # - including ballast box on 3PH
As an example, my l3240 would be listed thusly:
32-26.5-3240-3450-5120-5970
Much simpler than looking it up on TratorData, eh?
Oh - BTW, I remember Lisa Lou, wasn't she from the Islets of Langerhans?
