Mrkdmar - Sorry to hear of your issue with the Legacy. It would seem unlikely it was the fault of the oil. I am not familar with the Legacy, gas or diesel? I have used synthetic ATF and gear oil over the years with no issues, of course I had no issues using dino products either. The big advantage to me with synthetics is the longer service life. In equipment that I do not run as much I tend to go with regular dino stuff.

I used the Mobil 1 Synthetic Atf in my final drive on the Toyota Camry and besides protecting the gears the mileage per gallon went up . I felt good about it, but the Highlander uses special ATf fluid for electric shift..

Back when I used to do a lot of field service work all over I would average about 40,000 miles on my car per year. At the time I drove a Pontiac Bonneville 3800. I changed the oil every 10,000 miles, used a Purolator Pure-One filter and Mobil-One 10w30 full synthetic. Car currently is retired and sitting in the junker's row behind my barn with 287,000 on the clock. Still runs great, used less than a quart of oil in 10K miles, oil pressure was fine- 2/3 gauge cruising at 2000 rpms and 1/4 gauge at hot idle. What finally killed that car was rust. All the steel lines had been replaced piecemeal and it started popping rear brake lines again. This time I could see rust at the suspension mounts and door hinge pillars. Not worth fixing.

My 1989 Jeep Cherokee Laredo has 300,000 miles on it, and I change the oil every 5000 miles with regular "Whatever is on sale" 10w40 oil and filters, usually AutoZone package deals. It uses a quart every 3000 miles or so depending on how hard I am running it, leaked and burnt.

My 2003 Toyota Tundra V-8 I use only Castrol GTX 5w30 and whatever oil filters I have in stock that fit I got on sale at AutoZone. 7500 mile change intervals. At 7500 miles it usually is down less than half a quart. Motor is tight and clean inside.

3k. I use to do the extended oil changes on my 2003 f-350 diesel with amsoil synthetic. I had the oil sent in for anylisis ay 7k and the TBN had dropped like a rock. so I determined that the expensive oil was a sham. I change now at 3k and let ford
do the change.

i hear all these amsoil freaks do OA at 5k and say they get 30k out of oil and it was still good.:confused2:

Yeah, I hear the same thing. I sent my oil in to blackstone labs and at 7k it wasnt good. so, as I stated before. Its 3k oil changes for me. Ford only charges 90 bucks and I dont have to bother with disposal.

Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck in my car changed at every 10-12k....others with same car/oil have done samples and UOA shows no change until about 15k miles.

Volvo V90 (straight 6, RWD) and Dodge Caravan SE (V6, FWD). Both get oil changes when the snow tires go on in Oct/Nov and if I am feeling up to it, a filter change when the snow tires come off in April.
~10k miles per year on both cars running M1 5W-30 Synthetic and Mann filters (both take the same filter so I buy them by the case from FCP Groton).

Had the head on my Volvo redone last winter (t-belt idler bearing let go and bent a bunch of valves) and the guy who did the work insisted on conventional oil for the first 2-3k miles. Just changed it back to synthetic and noticed that the oil pressure light goes out faster on startup and there is less valvetrain noise on startup.

Whats the TBN at when you get the test results? I've never heard of an oil that resists breakdown.

He may be referring to increased levels of wear metals rather than other aspects of the oil ....

But since you raised the issue, what exactly is "TBN dropping like rock" ?

I mean, I assume that Blackstone did provide a report with a TBN number didn't they ?

What was it ?

What was the TBN number of the oil before use ? (VOA)

Did you also have a TAN done ?

What was Blackstone's recommendation on the oil at 7K ?

The premise of your statement seems somewhat odd .... TBN does drop .... it's supposed to .... that's an indication that it's doing job .....

the oil started out at 14 TBN (Total base number) and dropped to 6 at 7000 miles. They recommended changing it. this has been several years ago and I dont have the test sheets or the truck any longer.

TBN: Is a measurement of the reserve alkalinity remaining in engine lubricants and is
indicitive of the oils ability to counteract acid formation. decrease in TBN affects the ability
of the lubricant to protect against corrosion of such engine parts as rings and cylinder
liners. a low TBN usually means a low dispersion characteristic and a depleted additive package.

Fair enough.

Ummm .... yeah .... ?

Might be worth noting the comments on TBN in the above UOA's, particularly in the first two. The vehicle in question currently has 376,000+ miles on it (original engine, no significant mechanical problems - ever ....) .... and runs like a top ....

Interesting reading and at 25 thousand miles??? What type bypass filter are you using?? I have not added one to this engine yet, as i do still have factory warranty...So as that is up,,, then i plan on adding the second filter..

my truck ran fine as well and I wanted to keep it that way. I simply followed the advice of the lab.

this was back in 2004/05 I believe and it was $45.00 if I remember correctly. I'm sure its gone up by now like everything else.

I bet it is more too. We still send in samples on equipment here, But I haven't thought about sampling my Mobil 1 since i parked all my diesels except the tractor..I still like the wipe test on the white paper towel, with the dipstick..Looking at color, and particles, at about evey third tank of gas...I did find a bad oil filter once doing exactly that..Paper particles were in the oil, the dipstick looked slightly fuzzy..

I never tried that, Sound useful to a trained eye. I will start to pay more attention to my dipstick samples, thanks...

Yup ...

I didn't drain and totally change out the oil until that sump had over 51,000 miles on it .... and it was likely still good then (I have a sample from that drain I still haven't gotten around to sending in :confused2:)

Blackstone's report forms make it a little confusing - it's the same oil sump from mile 135,283 to mile 160,259 on the odometer and the makeup oil listed is a total up to that time on the last two UOA's, not cumulative (IOW, 5.25 total quarts over 24,976 miles)

Consulting my maintenance log, I see that the entire sump (around 10.5 quarts) was eventually changed out at 186,657 .... so 186,657 minus 135,283 = 51,371 miles on the sump before changing ....

What type bypass filter are you using??
A Motor Guard M-30, modified by Ralph Woods of Texas .... essentially it's a TP filter (toilet paper - I mostly used Scott 1000 :D) .... similar to a Frantz ....

I usually changed the filter every 3K to 5K miles (roll of TP is less than a buck) and added maybe a 1/4 to 1/2 quart of make up oil.

Right now the bypass filter is off the truck - I got tired of changing the filter so often (I'm lazy and I run a lot of miles) ....

I have a centrifuge (Spinner) filter I haven't gotten around to installing yet .... should require less servicing.

I have not added one to this engine yet, as i do still have factory warranty... So as that is up,,, then i plan on adding the second filter..
Worthwhile investment if you run a lot of miles or hours IMHO ....

I run 20K miles on each oil change on my Honda Accord with no issues at all. And also change my oil once a year on my 2005 Duramax with both using Amsoil. I am also a Amsoil dealer so if anyone has any questions about our products I can help.
