Try calling a local fencing company and ask if they have any used/salvage fencing. I was pricing some new heavy chain link for an arena drag and asked about used; they said they had lots, so a big saving.

That's been one of my concerns. I started wearing a dust mask while I was loosening and piling the dirt. How do you tell if a shingle has asbestos? Do you break one and see if its stringy?

Easiest field test, use a cigarette lighter; if it burns - no asbestos

WRONG! asbestos only way to find out, is by a lab. with correct equipment normally a microscope is required. or something much more costly!

Don't mean to be negative, but if the shingles are composite you should check for the presence of asbestos. Laying on the ground undisturbed, the shingles should not be a problem. Start messing with them and the asbestos becomes friable, you have problems.

I did some reading and they've done testing at recyclers and out of thousands of asphalt shingle samples tested they might find one or two samples containing less than 1% asbestos. It wasn't widely or heavily used in asphalt shingles.

We couldn't find a reliable method of doing it yourself, and paid a local environmental lab to test some ceiling tiles we thought were most likely asbestos. Turned out, the tiles were just fiberglass so MNBobcat may have a point. Find a local environmental lab to give you a report, or there are some on the web such as:

The above is just an ad I found on Google, and I know nothing about that facility.

Think about the fact that the lab is going to ask you for the address of where the sample was taken.

Check with the Dumpster supplier first. Generally they limit the fill with dirt to about 1 foot or so as it is too heavy to lift and transport. Thirty CY of dirt would be over 80,000# not counting the bin or truck.

Around here you'd get three tons allowance with that $450 dumpster and $100 for each additional ton. And no dirt or concrete, that has to go in a special dumpster.

Hi Guys,

As I got into that pile further I found what looked like fiberglass cloth and it had spread all over the ground from working the pile. When you crushed it in your fingers, it turned to white dust. If you picked it up, white powdery like dust filled the air.

Needless to say, that made me rather concerned. It wouldn't burn either. So I got out some brand new fiberglass cloth I have and tested it and it wouldn't burn either. That was good news because then it was possible it was fiberglass backing from the shingles and not asbestos. The thing is...I've never seen fiberglass powder like that when it gets old.

I took 2 samples to a lab today ($50) and it came back negative on asbestos. Was well worth the piece of mind it gave me.

But it goes to show that you need to be cognizant of what you could be digging up. I learned a valuable lesson and am very appreciative that you guys pointed out that there could be some nasty stuff in there. I've been wearing a cartridge respirator when I work. It helps keep the dirt/dust out of my lungs, too.

I'd need 10 dumpsters for what I had on hand. No, can't do the dumpster option. But I did find someone who wanted 30 yards of it for fill so now I'm down to about a half a pile!

Our dumpster company lets us put in what ever we want (other than haz-mat and tires). There is a flat rate for a xx yard dumpster with a weight of up to x tons. Every ton over the limit is $70, IIRC.
