Easiest way?

Flush cut the thing.
Throw an old centerless tractor rim on top.
Dump 2 bags of charcoal inside the rim, topped with a bunch of small splits of wood, and brush.
gallon of diesel and then torch it.

Keep adding small chunks of wood, and keep it burning for a day or two.
Generally, you will have it burned sub flush the first time, but might have to go at it a second time.

Good luck to ya. Big stumps can be a pain.

You're right, as kids that's all we had. And an old McCulloch chain saw. And a big heavy bar
with a cutting edge. No wonder my back is ruined 50 years later...

I just had a similar sized stump to deal with (36" maple). I even have a BH, but it's not worth digging out one that big unless you're putting a building on top of it or something. I just rented a stump grinder and ground it down 6 - 12" everywhere and then backfilled and called it a day. If you can grind down most of the center then the roots don't have that much volume, so as it decays you shouldn't end up with much settling. A chainsaw probably isn't going to help much, but if you go that way you can get a carbide chain, which may help it stay sharp and they make chains specifically for cutting along the grain.
