Ladia,

What is the current state of higher education in Eastern Europe?

Prior to ******'s rise and the aftermath of WWII, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Russia, Hungary, etc. were the source of many great scientists and engineers. And they had world-class universities. Some of the greatest Old World centers of learning where in those nations. Are they rebuilding?

I can speak about Czechoslovakia only. The population was 100% literate. There was a time when Czechoslovakia had the largest number of graduates from engineering and science programs per capita in the world. I kind of vaguely remember that it was about double of Japan which was number two. That doesn't say anything about quality though. The fact was that there was large number of very good engineers. The lack of progress was caused by colossal mismanagement of resources and economy.
I have several friends who were working in R&D in the past. They told me they worked on company project about 10% of the time and rest on their personal projects such as electronic ignition or interval control for windshield wipers for cars they were putting together at home and selling them to make some extra money.
One of the guys designed a machine that makes pencils (he was R&D engineer for pencil and pen maker) but it was never built until the regime collapsed. He and his son now own small business making them and selling them all over the world.
Desperation is a mother of invention. Classmate of my son lost his job after the regime collapsed. He and his brother found that there was lot of old unused machinery lying around on former collective farms. They bought few AO torches and went around offering disposal service. They removed all parts that had some value and cut the rest in pieces and sold the metal. The business expanded rapidly and today it is pretty large company that deconstructs metal structures all over the world.
There are many stories like that. The country changed quite rapidly for better after the commies were gone.
Little about history:
When Austrian Hungarian Empire blew up after WW1 90% of its industrial power was located where the Czech Republic is today. So called 1st republic (Czechoslovakia between WW1 and WW2) became 7 largest economy on the world with only about 12 million people. The country suffered only insignificant WW2 damage. All locomotives on the railroad were shot, few bridges were bombed, Skoda factory in Plzen was bombed and that was about it. Germans moved a lot of military production to Czechoslovakia during the war because it was out of reach of allied bombers. When Germans left the factories were ready to take off having initial supply of materials courtesy of Germany. Red army overthrew the government 1948 and installed communists in power. Then it went downhill from there. About 1963 the country was pretty much bankrupt. There was not much love between Czechoslovakian communists and the Russians. Most communists at any level were simple opportunist that cared little about the ideology. They just packed their pockets. About 1966 they tried to separate themselves from Russian control and tried to reform the party. But 1968 Brezhnev sent Red army to install the obedient one back. After that production every key part of pretty much of any important product was moved away from the country so they could choke it if necessary. In example friend of mine worked in a company that made radars and guiding systems for commercial airports. Production of magnetrons was moved to Russia and they ended making just the antennas.

Yes i know that... Zetor introduced the Zetor 30 with a direct injected Diesel engine in 1949, with the idea to start producing them in series and selling them which would make it a world novelty. The Commies didnt want that, they wanted bigger tractors for their kolchoz farms... The chief designer of Zetor got fed up with it and went into the development of guided missiles, because in that field he didnt have to worry about research funds...

About the rest of it, wasnt it so that at a given time, 80% of the USSR's vegetables came from 5% of the land area, because people went working on their own veggie plots instead of on the state farms ?
Anyways, there are still people that believe that in theory, socialism is going to work and that just the Russian execution of the theory was wrong... The founding fathers of America constructed a constitution with great foresight: They knew that if a government would get too much involvement in peoples lives, it would be a breeding ground for tyrans. Looking back in history, you see that Soviet socialism lead to a tyrannical government led by a madman called Stalin, who purged all military officers and engineers who were smarter than him, and a few decades later, in German National Socialism Adolf ****** got his way on the country by nationalising the industry, healthcare, elderly care, untill he had absolute power. Yes, though Neonazism is often concidered to be politically extreme right, the word **** comes from National Socialist... which is left, pushing for more government control.

So the US founding fathers foresaw what was to be proved in the future: A government with too much control in peoples live, will become tyrannical because its power cannot be challenged by individuals. Thats the prime reason why EVEN IN THEORY, pure socialism is evil for the simple reason that history proves that this system paves the way for tyrants. (by the way, i DO support a social safety net funded by the state for those who cant: thats jut a matter of humanity)

I watch the news how America is confused by a black president that attacks the root of what makes America America, unable to speak up because of political correctness, which tells you're a racist to speak up against the policies of the president because he is black... We had that in Holland in 2002, when a right wing gay caused a landslide in the elections, and talked freely about the social problems with radical islam immigrants in society. He was shot by a "tolerant" left wing treehugger, but because Fortuijn had the courage to speak up and replace political correctness (invented by a Marxist thinktank called the Frankfurt school) with freedom of speech, people got to think and the political establishment took on the signal...
Right now we just have Geert Wilders, a guy who doesnt know if he wants to get votes from left or right, insults minorities to get attention, and uses all the same tactics formerly used by dangerous men of the past... :/

By the way Ladia, sometimes you see people in East Germany mourning for DDR times of the past, because they felt it went better back then... Hearing from you how things went, i wonder what kind of people would want to get the old system back... Perhaps the ones that never took an active role in their livelihood anyways ?

What if soviets wouldn't occupy half of Europe?

Most advanced international scientific-commercial playground in my country is Laser Industry.
Laser industry makes Lithuania exceptional in the world - Technologies - Made in Lithuania

Meanwhile there is some challenge of the space race among the three Baltic states. Hahaha. Estonia already launched their nanosatellite "ESTCube-1" from the Guiana Space Center by Vega vehicle. Latvia and Lithuania are waiting for the countdown - "Venta-1" by India’s launch vehicle PSLV and "LitSat-1" by "Space X" vehicle from Kennedy Space Centre, Fl accordingly.
A journey into space of first Lithuanian satellites is coming up | KTU Innovation and Entrepreneurship centre | www.ktu.lt/ivc/en
BTW, among the first rocketry researchers like Jiao Yu or Conrad Hass, the name of Kazimierz Siemienowicz (Kazimieras Semenavicius) who introduced a multi-stage rocket, is well known. His provenance is my country. He is an author of a manual "The Complete Art of Artillery" first printed in Amsterdam, 1650. I'm familiar with Semenavicius' descendant, who lives in my city.

But that, what Ladia has said is most important - I mean small business generation and development. Because it involves lots of population. Guys create here the companies and quickly go to bankrupt. They are not well enough educated to run business properly. The best prospering companies here are those which run franchise contracts.

You dont need education to run a business properly. In Holland there is an entrepeneur who started out as a scrap trader, bought old railway cars, sold the undercarriage for scrap and used the superstructures as holiday bungalows which he rented to people. Later he started a structural steel business, bought a potato starch factory which he converted into an indoor lunapark (great when it rains on your kids birthday ! ;) ) and 15 years ago he bought the Kalkar nuclear plant in Germany (which was never active, so no radioactivity) stripped the scrap, and also made a lunapark. He pulled a safety net over the cooling towers and used the blowers to give people a sensation of weightlessness by blowing them up in the air. This guy finished only elementary school because he was badly dyslexic. He has turned scrap into bungalow parks, and rubble into theme parks, with no noteworthy education.

Businesses often fail because managers lack the feeling with whats going on on the floor and therefor keep the wrong people in place... And the most sustainable companies are the ones that turnover their money and invest what they have earned, not what they can borrow or lease... Many earthmoving companies failed in Holland because there was less work, but people that operate solely on external capital (with leased equipment) still have to make their monthly payments so they decide to work under their price for no profit, so they at least are able to pay off their monthly fees, thereby wasting the free market prices. The companies that bought and payd for their equipment, just leave their equipment in the shed if they cant make any money on a job, because their equipment is already payd for and they are not slaves of their lease agencies or financers...

And by contraries, there are well skilled managers in the companies, but the owners are wasting funds while the investment recourses are much needed.

Also very true... But nonetheless, governments should allow businesses to prosper or fail. Bailouts are a reward to poor management, and anything subsidized will increase... :p

That's my case as well as of millions of others. Soviets could give you 0.15 ac (standard - not more, not less) of land to grow vegetables. We were talking already about why did they do that? Lack of food in the whole country.
And when the Freedom came on, we sold that plot and invested into my mother's native land, which we've got back from the government under the Act of Restitution. Meanwhile I'm farming over here.

It must have been a h3ll of a job to fight over your mothers land when everybody claimed property rights which were confisqated over 70 years ago... I've seen photos of some 20 tractors in the Balkan where the government gave away free land, when old land register files were lost: Property rights were granted to the first man to plough that land after march 1st... Private farmers united to plough as much land with anything that could plough, to claim property rights and divide the land later on, because otherwise the richer farmers that had bigger equipment would be able to plough all the land at that day...

And when my brother worked at a former state dairy in eastern Germany a few years after the Wende, he found highways suddenly stopping because the owners of the land it was built on, claimed their property back and rebuilt their parents house in the middle of the highway...

No, man, bring me from the socialism far, far away! Wherever it's coming from...
Because the socialistic society is not a creative one, it's a destructive society by its nature. If not to say moreover, it generates non-responsibility and even criminal trends.

I wouldn't say we have been in the same situation. Actually local government announced that it'll be realizing the Act of Restitution on the total land of a country, and everybody knew that in advance. There were some incidents indeed. Especially while talking about those, who live in the suburbs and in the towns. But these have got the compensations in other ways: land in another place, which could be much larger than that in a town, subsidies, woods, etc.
We have an issue right now. There are already built highways, which need to widen. Now owners ask for much more, than the real price of the property is. Don't know, how will they solve it.
