Luxury - a material object, service, etc., conducive to sumptuous living, usually a delicacy, elegance, or refinement of living rather than a necessity. Luxury vs. necessity.... depends who you ask..... if someone has a high tolerance for heat, they may consider AC in a vehicle to be a luxury. Most people consider AC a necessity today, even in many parts of Canada. From a business standpoint, what makes sense is paying for higher functionality - to your point about making One More Call, that day. Anyone who has driven a lot (even recreationally) understands the value of a really good driver's seat. Paying for better seating ergonomics (or even something like Bose's) has various benefits to the business. Do ergonomic seats need to be covered in tooled leather ? Do you need to have the latest Schnitzergruber 9000 Auto-Sync interface on the Infotainment system ? Depends who you talk to, as to where they draw the Bling line, vs. functional improvement. Rgds, D.

These days, having air conditioning and cruise control is pretty important for resale reasons alone. Seat comfort and adjustability are my primary concern when buying a truck I'll be driving for more than 5K miles per year. Power windows & locks are nice, but just another thing to fail down the line.

It is really hard to get a basic truck interior like you could in 1927.

Depends on what one is accustomed to.

Can't miss something you never had.

One of the Docs I work with just bought a ranch... his daily driver is a Ferrari.

Decided he needed a truck and went out and bought a fully loaded 4wd one ton dually Dodge Diesel that was pushing 70k purchase price and he likes it...

I know it helped the local economy in OR where his ranch is located.

He also has several pristine Stihl saws... had a tree guy doing some work and they did not know this guy is a Doctor... they were in awe of his saws..

Some people have money and don't mind spending it.

It works well for the border States, as many Canadians supply foreign aid (aka cross-border shopping).

I've made more than one trip myself for auto parts, as often the exact same part is half price down your way (n.b. - I'm talking about regular retail pricing, not a USA Sale price). That's doubly ironic, as many of those parts are often made in the province that I live in.

But yes, it's pretty ridiculous up here - even with our dollar at par, often high end vehicles are $10,000 more, taxes are high, and unless you are dumping a vehicle off-lease, once you need to repair something, parts prices are ridiculous.

Can't imagine why fewer young people are driving these days.....

Whine Off :)

Rgds, D.

As others stated, single payer health care system is the cost adder.

The price of everything will likely go up here too and not just trucks!

By the way my truck is a 2003 and just started shedding metal with every slam of the tailgate. Wonderful wi salty roads :(

I guess the closest is the WT series from Chevrolet.

Look at one last week... rubber mats, no radio, no power windows... it did have A/C and Automatic.

For a while I drove an F100 that was 3 on tree, no power steering, power brakes, A/C or radio....

My dad purchased a '77 F-100 with the straight 6, three on the tree, a radio and step bumper, and the floor was a rubber mat. It wasn't fancy but it did what it was purchased to do and it was cheap and gave decent gas mileage. But tell me...how many of us would actually BUY such a basic truck if it was even available?

Well... judging from the parking lot at work... not many.

Matters not if it's a Honda, Land-rover or F150... they all come pretty much loaded these days.

The only new car I ever bought I ordered because I didn't want to pay a bunch extra for Home Link and the Winter Package plus Leather and loaded as the Dealer's say is how they come.

It would be nice to have A/C in my trucks... there are times when it would be nice... then again... it's not all that effective on a service van because of sheer volume.

My little jeep as pretty much bare bones... don't think it has a single extra... I did add a radio and hitch.

Even though it's bare bones I really enjoy driving it around...

One of the receptionists just bought a F150... I think it's the platinum edition with retracting running boards, premium interior, wheels and tires... I know it set them back a bundle... she said she has very low interest for 72 months and that is why they decided to go all out.

If they can afford it, more power to 'em!

My wife and I both drive vehicles with leather, and somewhat loaded. Our first vehicles were fairly bare-bones, but we have moved up. If you want the nice things in life and can afford it, then why not? It's the buyer's money, let them get what they want!

Now, if they can't afford it, that's a whole 'nother discussion all together.

Maybe 10 years ago there were several with big SUV's and then gas prices spiked...

About half just stopped paying and had them repossessed.

Grandmother always said if you don't have the cash in hand... you cannot afford it.

Remembering this has saved me a couple of times!

And if we think about it, when we buy something with all the bells and whistles don't we justify it by saying: "It will have better resale value with all this crap, and the 4wd, and the digital dash, and the (fill in the blank).....yes, you know who I am talking about. People like ME.
