Chain saw safety

I just bought a pair of chaps and will put them to use this weekend. We had some pretty high winds the other night and lost a tree at the edge of the yard. Plus, I will be able to put my new (to me) chipper to work!

For anyone that's near a Mennards, they have Forrester brand chaps on clearance for $29.99. Regular price was $54.99.

Just remember the chaps have straps that may get caught in brush or when getting on and off the tractor. They do protect well against those unfortunate chainsaw accidents.

I always get a snarky chuckle about the naysayers regarding chain saw safety gear. Yessah I am glad you people never have hurt yourself when you run a chainsaw in your underwear and flip flops. The Lord loves drunks and fools I was once told. There is a reason Professionals practice chain saw safety and accidents still happen. I venture to say I have more DECADES hanging onto the end of a chainsaw than some of you. From the Sixties to present day I have seen many improvements for the worker, lots I poo poohed in the beginning, but the fact is helmets, boots, glasses, chaps and a careful and observant attitude can save you a lot of grief. I see yahoos in the third world countries dang near buck naked falling cypress and I jest go jeezzzzzz. Folks I am all for self preservation.

Thanks for the heads up, will check out the local Menards tonight...odds are if I do buy them I will never need them, but: "Better to have them and not need them, than need them and not have them...."

I got a nice set of Sherrill chaps several years ago - just love 'em. Automatically makes me feel a little safer (and hotter) whenever I put 'em on.

I got my chaps after the emergency room visit and stitches. Wish I would have had them before.

After using chain saws off-and-on for almost 50 years, I can't stress enough the importance of safety. A chainsaw injury can happen very quickly. I didn't wear chaps until 2 years ago when I had another close call. The saw chain put a few nicks into the left thigh portion of my overalls - no injury to me. It was right above the small scar I have from a similar accident 40 years ago. I shut the saw down, shopped around, and bought chaps.

I have a Stihl forestry helmet and it stinks because I cannot get the mickey-mouse ear protectors to seal tightly against my head. I wear a 7 1/2 hat size, suggesting the helmets really stink for people with normal sized heads.
