Only Ram adopting the new tow ratings.

This thread is about towing. The diesel Ram doesn't have enough payload capacity to tow and haul a family at the same time without exceeding it's payload. 700 lbs would allow the wife and kids to go camping and ride with dad. It would also be the difference of taking firewood and bicycles vs buying and renting them at the campground. You shouldn't need a 3/4 ton pickup to haul a 6000 lb camper or boat a few times a year. Ram makes a fine truck but it's payload capacity is much lower than the competition. I am anxious to see the new payloads for Ford and have to believe they are going to be in 3/4 ton ranges for the F150.

Now you've gone and bashed Ram. We can't have that in a Ram thread you Ford fanboi!

Just so happens that I agree with your statement, and that is the entire point of increased payload.

My bad, I forgot this was only a Ram praise thread. I did mention they make a fine truck. I just wouldn't consider the 1500 series a great tow or hauling vehicle which is what this thread was supposed to accomplish. In fact, I would consider the Ram 1500 series at the bottom of the list for towing and hauling. Whoops..... I did it again. I will end and say that the Ram 1500 has the best interiors, creature comforts, and ride quality but that would be a different thread.

Interesting how a thread about new towing ratings ends up focused on 1 truck that probably makes up far less than even 1% of the trucks manufactured. I guess that is what the Ford guys want to talk about so here we are. SSDD

To be a truly fair test shouldn't they all have the same axle ratios?

Of course it does.
They are advertising up to 700#. That's 700# that can be added to every capacity #.

Just remember that the 2015 F150 is 700# lighter than the previous F150. However, the previous F150 is already around 350# HEAVIER than comparable GMs and Rams (Ford rightly skips over this in all their advertising). So the Ford is gaining 700# capacity over its former self but only about 350# over the competition.

Now back to the SAE J2807 Tow Rating --
The following manufacturers have already said they will apply the standard starting with 2015 models: GM, Toyota, Ford, Ram. (GM and Ford were actually ready with the 2013 models but chose not to apply the standard until all other manufacturers were on board too).

Nissan has not stated it yet but have said they already test to the standard and are currently deciding if they will publish their results.

Not necessarily. If that's the case they must have the same gears in the tranny and tire sizes.

It clearly states they took each manufacturers most capable combination.

Is this one truck you mention the Ram 1500?

RAM sales are strong as are Ford's F150, the leader, no surprise there. The surprise is RAM percentage gains of sales over last year, 25% compared to Ford at 2.7%, Chevy is loosing, sales down by 7.6%. This information was published at the close of the first quarter of this year.

June's pick-up truck sales change the game a bit with Ford sales down, GM running flat and RAM still gaining strong.

RAM is winning new buyers that are coming from what looks like GM and a few Ford use-to-bes.

I could give a couple reasons that Ford truck sales are mostly flat, but I'm sure that would be construe as slamming other brands, so I just won't say anything to try to clear that up.

Ram sales have definitely improved. GM have, well, tanked.

I can see two reasons. Ram's new power trains and Ford loyalist waiting for the 2015. I'd sure wait til the end of the year if I was dead set on a Ford. Too many improvements over the 2014 coming to buy a Ford today.

I am surprised GM hasn't pick off more since it too has made improvements. Guess they weren't great enough to sway the buyers.
