Converting a woodsplitter into a firewood processor

I call to order, no online shopping option I know of. They are sold in lots of 200. The first time I bought bags he was good enough to break a lot and sell me 50. The second time he sold me 100. I'll likely buy more this year or next but will be buying a full lot. It sounds expensive (heck, it is expensive) but if you look at an extra $3.50 per face cord, it's not too bad. I pay about $35 per face cord to block and split my own vs $120 per face cord if it's cut, dried and delivered, so it's easy to justify that cost.

I guess your right about that and you also have to figure in that bagging would save some time in the long run. No matter how you mess with wood there is a lot of handling involved and if you can remove one or two of the steps that has to be a plus.

I don't sell firewood any more and the wood I cut is all for my own use. I don't have a wood shed either so right now bagging wouldn't do me much good....just another step for me as I still just pile my wood in one large pile and dig it out as I need it. I normally just cover half the pile to keep the snow and rain off that part and as I use up the covered wood I move the cover to a new part of the pile. Then when I start cutting again I pile in the place that I just used up and I always have some green wood and dry wood in the same pile all the time. Wood dries in a big pile pretty fast but you still need to cover the part of the pile that you are using at the time. I hate messing with a tarp but I hate stacking wood even worst.

This is the beauty of bags, there NO handling for stacking or fetching wood. Instead of throwing it from the splitter into a big pile, you'd be throwing it into a bag. When the bag is full, the tractor does the lifting. Stacking them in a pyramid style row and covering them with a tarp means they dry fast and are easily available in the winter. The tractor again does the lifting back to the house. With my processor, I'll have the tractor lift logs onto the processor, cut and split directly into a bag, moved to dry by tractor, moved back to the house to burn. So the first time I'll touch a piece of wood will be when I bring it into the house as needed. It's also nice to have a full cord at the house, right outside the back door. No more clearing a path to the wood shed just to be able to haul wood in to the house, I can do it in my slippers now. As a bonus, we now have the wood shed full of kids bikes and outdoor toys.

I can't believe I never thought of putting a small tarp over each one! Pretty expensive way to do it, but I may wait for a sale and do 15 of them for the wood I'll burn in one year. I use a large tarp which works very well, but tends to wear quickly and tear.

How do you load your bags? It looks like you almost stack the logs in there since they're all oriented the same way. Without getting in the bag while somebody passes them, I'm not sure how you do that unless you've got really long arms! How well does it dry that way?

Nice stack

Looks like the stacks the guy delivers around here. He crosses the crosses the corners so it holds nice and square. I like the tarp for a hat. lol.

Get the cheap PA tarps when on sale. IIRC the white really cheap ones are something like $3 or 4 each.

If you watch the sales, you can find them at TSC or Crappy tire that cheap too

I got some 4x4 tarps for $1 or $2 at a discount store.

HF has a coupon for a free tarp. No purchase necessary.

PA (Princess Auto) is roughly our equivalent to HF since (to my knowledge) we don't have them in Canada. Thanks for suggestions guys, I'll keep my eyes open, it would make things MUCH easier.
