As I have stated more times than I can count ..If it's on your property..I could care less. It's the people who are too lazy to remove the rotted drawbars that are never used..These goofs are among the rest of us...This is hysterical

Usually hitch gets hit because they are taking inventory on what's in your truck bed.
This is for:
A. Being nosy
B. Looking to steal
C. Making sure you have an adequate amount of things in your bed to justify owning a diesel pickup so they can judge you.

-So it looks like your a C.

I never looked it up on the legal information of hauling in vehicle But isn't it legal to haul 10 ' length material in bed of pick-up if a flag is attached to rear anything over length. Do it all the time .
and lumber yard provides a red flag and usually nails it on for you.
And if the tail gate is down it is hard to hit the tow hitch.

Put the red flag on the hitch. Problem solved. ;-)

Went to get my truck inspected yesterday and apparently its the "law" here in Nova Scotia to pull the hitch!

Guy doing the inspection said that its a $2xx.00 fine :eek:

Came home and looked online but could not find a specific MV statute about unused hitches but there is a section under MV inspections and protruding devices like hitches. So its likely not the police who will fine you, but DOT Compliance. I cant see it applying to consumer vehicles unless you did something really stupid and DOT really wanted to have a talk to you, but commercial guys could very well be hit by this.

Trailer Hitches - Gone Hunting - Nova Scotia Hunting

Same in Ontario. You also have to fold in your trailer mirrors when not towing. They can't be more than 12" from the door.

How on earth do you guys keep track of all the petty laws up there? :)

Basically you don't. Keep your equipment in good clean shape and don't drive anything anywhere during the spring and fall enforcement blitzes.

Recently I had a question for the USDOT, as I was supposed to haul some equipment down to Tulsa. So I phoned three different regional offices along the route, and then the Federal Head office in NY... Got three ambiguous answers and the head office couldn't answer my question period....

Gee, evidently, they can't keep up with them as well.

Mirror Widths and Lengths

The length of mirrors that extend beyond the front of a motor home are not included in the overall length of the vehicle.

The width of mirrors that extend beyond the side of a motor home, truck camper and truck are not included in the overall width of the vehicle.

Mirrors that extend more than 305 mm (12") from the side of a car or SUV must be removed when the vehicle is not towing a trailer. A car or SUV, with extended mirrors installed, cannot exceed 2.6 m (8'6"), even when towing a trailer.

Nothing mentioned about hitches in that link and your post alluded that laws were same as Nova Scotia about hitches (and thread is about hitches)

Actually I don't see that...........he quoted a Nova Scotia poster that stated there was a law in Nova Scotia about hitches being removed.........Tim (from Ontario) stated it is the same in Ontario and also that mirrors had addditional laws , ...........I asked for a link (to prove that Ontario has a law the same as Nova Scotia)....he replied by only providing law about mirrors (which isn't the debate we are having about hitches) I stated the law he quoted does not even mention hitches..............So respectfully where was I wrong ? Or are you now an expert about Ontario laws too Chris? He may have an obscure law about hitches I have not seen in Ontario and I would stand to be corrected, but he did not provide that link. ...........obviously it is time to close this thread because now it is getting silly.

   / Must remove the hitch? #295
From Ontario Highway Traffic Act R.R.O. 1990, REGULATION 611

SAFETY INSPECTIONS
BODY WORK

1. (1) The body, sheet metal and equipment shall be inspected and tested for conditions hazardous to occupants, pedestrians or vehicles and,
(a) no bumper, fender or mudguard shall have been removed;
(b) each bumper shall be securely mounted;
(c) each mud flap, where applicable, shall be in position;
(d) no bumper, fender, molding or other part shall have a broken, bent or sharp edge that protrudes in such a way as to constitute a hazard to persons or vehicles;

Depending upon the government official conducting the inspection, a receiver hitch could be interpreted to violate this section of the Safety Inspection regulations.

Also, threads drift from the original subject all the time.

Of course you don't.

Not a expert at anything but I am able to read.

Better remove the radio antenna (it threads on for easy removal), license plates (attached with screws) and tow hooks (bolts come out with hand tools) before someone puts out an eye, scrapes their knee or snags their jeans.

Until I read of someone firsthand getting an actual citation for leaving their unused hitch in, this topic is BS. Certainly entertaining though.

My post was in response to a specific comment that there were no regulations in Ontario Canada that could be used regarding hitches. No one claimed anyone got a citation.

Also note, it's a safety inspection regulation, not a traffic regulation, and it applies to Ontario Canada, not Ohio.

Exactly, you've offered no proof, only speculation.

I didn't speculate about anything. The safety inspection cited could be used. Has it been? Don't know and don't care. I don't live in Ontario.
