The best thing Ford did is part ways in 2010 with International, the manufacturer of the 7.3, 6.0, and 6.4.

Agreed! It's much better to control your product when it is developed in-house.

My guess is in the next 10 Years Ram will part ways with Cummins and use an in house Fiat engine. This will only leave GM running an outsourced engine from Isuzu.

Chris

If Ram knows what is good for them, they won't part ways with Cummins. They will lose a ton of sales. How many guys have you asked what they drive and they say 'a Cummins'. It's not a Ram with a Cummins, it's a Cummins!

As far as GM goes, the Durmax was first sourced from Isuzu, but over the years, that has transitioned over to GM and is now largely developed and produced by GM.

DodgeMan beat me to it about the Ram/Cummins link.

The 6.4's haven't had a lot of reliability problems, but this one could be a lemon now. It seems that with some vehicles once they start messing with them for one or two problems, the variety of problems just compound. At some point you have to punt. But I wouldn't be afraid to get another 6.4...

Agreed. We have a 6.4 and the only repairs we made were either maintenance (pulleys and belts) or related to an extended layup before I bought it. (transfer case seal, brake booster seals). Resale on mine is barely depreciated from when I bought it 5 years ago so I must not be the only satisfied 6.4 owner out there. Sounds like your friend has a **** of a lemon or the mechanics working on it do more damage than good.

Agreed on the resale value. It's only about $3k less than when I bought mine 4 years ago.

An update, they are going to sell the truck. They got it back from the dealer and its suppose to be running OK. The dealers mechanic drove it and put 250 miles on it. Metal in the fuel filters but changing them seemed to fix it for now.

Are they selling it privately or trading? I was also hoping the dealer would step up and help them out. Good luck to them getting into another truck with minimal loss.

I don't really think you should run around on TBN claiming that it was a good engine.

con - text - kènˆ…tekst - noun - the circumstances that form the setting for an event, statement, or idea, and in terms of which it can be fully understood and assessed.

The context of every post on TBN, on every topic, by every person is that person is sharing their individual experience. They are not right or wrong. They don't have to be defended. They don't have to be counter balanced. For Chris the 6.4 was/is a good engine. For you it wasn't. TBNers are a smart and perceptive group of people who recognize that personal experience is one data point people use to make a purchase decision. They also know posters lose credibility when the attempt to speak for others.

I don't know about Ram and Cummins parting ways soon, it probably depends on how much influence Fiat has. They have had a 25 year old relationship so far. I'm pretty much an unabashed Dodge and Ram fan but stepping outside of my biased world, Cummins brings some people on board the Ram that wouldn't otherwise consider them.

It will come down to how well the 3.0 does in the 1/2 ton. If it has a good 5 year run of reliable service it will prove Fiat can make a diesel for the strict North America market. I would see no reason to keep Cummins around. Building in house will be much more cost effective.

I think it's been proven in the last 12 months Dodge and Cummins are not married by allowing Nissan put a diesel in a truck and going to the parent company for the 3.0 Eco Diesel.

I purchased my 2002 Ram 3500 truck because of the engine it had. I am happy that I did as I have the last year of regular fuel injectors:thumbsup:, but I do have the VP44 pump:thumbdown:
I guess each engine manufacturer has it's lemons, but it does sound like International has had at least one with 6.0 litre diesel.

Cheers

The 3.0 is an old diesel that's been around for awhile. Believe me when I say that RAM will get laughed out of the USA if they replace a Cummins with a Fiat. You'd have a hard time convincing farmers to trust an Italian diesel over an American household name that everyone respects (Cummins).
