I just bought this Ford Model 101 3 bottom plow. It was near my house, so I jumped on it. I have a couple of questions. I read somewhere on TBN how to measure to know if you have a 16 inch or other size. The plows are about 16 inches apart and the share is 38 inches long. How do I tell? Also, the rear disc,..... is it called a coulter, or a wheel, or disc? Measure horizontally from the inside of 1 beam to the outside of the next beam. This will give you plow size.

Rear wheel is a ROLLING LANDSIDE.

Nice plow.

Male or female?

Jeff,
Beam centerline to beam centerline is 14 inches.

Rolling Landside. Got it!

Thanks.

Is what male or female? Since the plow will not sweat anything......................she must be female. I don't care as long as it isn't new orange.:laughing::laughing:

There are 3 pieces or parts in the picture with the tape measure. The largest part is the mouldboard, the part directly in front of it is called a shin,
and the 3rd piece on the very bottom is the plow shear. Measure the length of the shear and this will tell you the plow size. The disc blades in front
of each bottom is called a coulter blade.

Your plow is bigger but I was thinking of getting the plows together and breeding them.

Ford Series 101 plows are in short supply and increasing demand.

Zdog,
Thanks. Now I am really confused:rolleyes:............................all three shears are 18 inches.:confused3: So is it a 14 inch or a 18 inch? I think it is a 14 inch, because the beams are the same width as the shears, so shear to shear cuts would be 14 inches wide.;)

Nahhh...............your plow has been connected to orange too long. You can't go around and expecting different colors to breed. I find no shortage in shopping for 101s...............you just gotta look in different time zones.

Goggle 101 3 bottoms and your find a ton of them:thumbsup:. This is the second one in a month, I found............within 2 hours of me.

All of our plows were 6 bottom rollover plows and were called 16 inch because that was the length of the plowshare. Google Artsway 166 plow and you will see that they are sold as 14 or 16 inch. Yes, you could have 18 inch shears on a much smaller plow.

Zdog,
I'll buy that. What is the advantage of a rollover plow .vs just plowing around and around and around the field?
Does anyone know the weight..........even a ballpark guess of this plow?

Nice find Brandi!

Per your own measurements, 14 inches center to center of the beams, you have a 14 inch plow. You do NOT measure the length of the shear (or share) to determine the size of your plow.

Rollover vs 1 way plow.
Advantage, you plow to one end of the field, flip it over plow back the other way, less wasted motion. only one dead furrow when you are finished instead of two.
Disadvantage, lots heavier, moving parts and double the wear parts.
Advantage, double the wear parts so double the time before replacement is required.
disadvantage, when you do replace the wear parts it costs a lot.
Advantage, you only replace the wear parts half as much. (didn't I already say that?)

I'm gettin' confused. :D

I have owned a three bottom 101 and it will be a good match for your tractor. Sure looks a 14" and you would measure between the beams as you have done or measure the width of the cut. I might have a parts book and an owner's manual for the 101 if interested. It will take a little while to set up but once that's done you're good forever.

6dogs,
I have a operators manual. A parts book would be a great help. I am not sure if I will like the Big RED Beast with narrow tires. I will have to go from max width...........the most narrow width. Something like 15 inches total. Which means swapping the rims and wheels around.

You probably don't have to swap the wheels. Maybe first try swinging the plow offset a bit. This plow is very versatile and at worst maybe wheels in the middle range. I pulled one on an 85 HP tractor with 18.4 x 34 tires and I also pulled it on a 42 HP Ford 2110 compact tractor with no wheel adjustments to either. I'll look for the book.

6dogs,
I just measured my rear tire center to center and also inside to inside. My rear tire might ride wide in the furrow, but according to the Ops Manual...............I am within 2-3 inches. So swinging the plow a little off of center, with the stabilzers, just might work. I'll play with it after I finish my fencing project. Worse case is to sale the plow and get 4 bottom that would pull with the drawbar.

DSC_0420.jpgDSC_0405.jpgI have a Ford Dearborn 10-209, 3 x 16's with coulters. Yours should scour just like mine after a few hours. Looks like yours has trip bottoms when striking a solid object. Once you have it setup to your tractor the art form of plowing begins.

Those are beautiful looking bottoms. What is your soil type?

   / Ford Model 101 3 Bottom Plow #20
Palouse, I'm on the eastern edge of it. The massive rolling wheat fields are west about 5 miles. The soil was blown in from the South & West eons ago and volcanic ash mixed in also. A quick search of Palouse soil will give you a better idea of what this soil is like.
