Trailer Sizes/Style recomnedations for 40hp tractor

I've had all types of trailers and for me it's a low boy, flat deck, and slide in ramps. Stand up ramps always seemed to be in the way and a Beaver Tail is wasted space.

you dont list what tractor.

but a 40hp Kubota (perhaps the lightest weight by size/hp) can be as little as 4000lb. on the other hand a 90's AG tractor (say a new holland TN55) in the 50hp range can be 6300lbs

then again a modern class three CUT could be as little as 3500lbs.

any way you slice it on the low end i would opt for nothing short of a 20' flat deck 10K (dual 5K axles) but if your at the upper end of the weights due to larger/AG size i would step up to the 14K trailers (dual 7K axles)

20' min 22' would be nice 24' and Im sure you wouldn't hate the extra 2'

for the record i have a 20' flat 10K equipment trailer for my TC33DA. and many times Ive been glad ive had all 20'

Here is a picture of my old 40HP New Holland TC40D with a backhoe and loader. A good 6ft rotary cutter will stick around 8 ft behind the tractor. Add a loader and you are probable close to the length of mine with the backhoe. The trailer is a 22ft tilt deck and rated for 14K.

Here is the same setup on a 20ft 10K trailer. I traded up to the larger trailer because I could not balance the tractor properly on the trailer to maintain the right tongue weight. Before the safety police chime in. No it is not chained down. I pulled on the trailer to see if it would fit which it did not. Never moved the truck, just took the picture to show the wife why I needed the new trailer.

I would recommend that you look at a minimum 20ft preferably 22+ and 12K or heavier. To be sure you will need to do some research on the exact model of tractor you are looking at and determine how much capacity you need. The weights can add up quickly. As for the style, you will get hundreds of opinions, but only you know how you will use it. Each style has their advantages and disadvantages. The other thing you need to verify is how much you truck can pull. That will open a whole new debate. :D

I have a trailer that is identical to your 20 ft 10K trailer, but mine has tip up ramps instead of the slide-in style. Never hauled anything more than building materials on it before I used it as a base to start building my tiny house on.

Learn from my mistake of getting a 20' trailer that is too short. Get a 24' long 83" wide dual 7000 pound dexter axle Load n Trail with tip up ramps. Life is too short for slide in ramps.

I would agree, but can his F 150 handle that???

I have a 20 foot trailer that is actually 16 foot deck plus four feet for the dovetail. It is too short. There is not room to load the tractor with the backhoe, loader and third implement. Since the grapple is usually on the tractor the bucket is usually the third implement. My loaded trailer weights about 11,000 pounds. It is a pretty good load for my gas F 350. My Grandpas diesel dully pulls 15K better and gets drastically better mileage doing it. I hate slide in ramps. The fold up ramps with the the stand to avoid lifting up your tow vehicle are much better. I know the tow ratings on a new F-150 are way up there, but I think you are pushing your luck.

An F150 with a 3.5L EB? It'll do just fine towing. Have you seen my F150 YouTube towing my tractor at 75mph?

Hills it downshifts to fifth and fourth gear.

How much does your tractor weigh? I would have to see it towing 12000 pounds up a mountain to believe it. I have to go down a mountain with about 1,000 feet elevation change to go very far in any direction. That is the easy part. Coming back up it works my gas F 350 hard pulling 11000 pounds.

I like the double front tongue jacks... have not seen that before.

Never had it on the scales, but it isn't 11,000 pounds. The tractor by itself is 7500 pounds plus. Several new F150 co figs are rated to tow just over 11,000 pounds. The 3.5L is not the weak link in the towing equation.

Coming from a guy who has had them all, 24 trucks in total, the EB is unbelievable towing. I have a 2012 with 3.73 gears. Hands down it tows as good as my 99 F350 SRW 7.3 diesel. Will it run with the new diesels, no. But it will smoke any gas truck 1 ton, 3/4, or 1/2 ton.

Chris, you always add a lot to the discussions...

My brother is in the market for a pickup for trailering and I have shared your posts with him...

He's always wanted a 1 ton diesel and is having a hard sell with the wife... most all the ranches around here run older 1 ton Ford Diesels... with the 7.3 and have found they just keep going...

His ranch "Truck" and go to the office vehicle is a 2005 Range Rover which he really enjoys.. bought it new before the ranch.

While it has plenty of power to tow his 7000 pound dump and horse trailers... the air suspension and light tongue weight are problematic... air suspension repairs are not cheap and have already happened twice outside warranty and the dealer says they will continue as long as he uses the Rover as a ranch truck..

Like many... anything he buys will have to fill multiple functions... towing, hauling, off road around the ranch and good enough to pickup the kids from school and take them to games and friendly enough for his wife to drive in a pinch.

Last winter he caught **** from the wife when the Rover got stuck to the frame in mud... I had to explain the same would have happened in a pickup... standard one.

His L3800 was soon to be stuck as it was sinking in... only his dozer had no problems pulling out the Rover...

The right equipment for the right task.

I'm not familiar with the tow ratings of your truck . I imagine it will be at its upper limits. Saw this trailer locally and I like the style if your truck could handle it

That trailer is about right. You might get away with a 20 footer if you want. I would go no shorter.

i have a 20ft 10k down2earth car trailer i like it other than needed to block the rear of the trailer to load heavy things (tractors, full size trucks) here it is with my father's DK40 on it

and my JD5055E

great example of the differences in weight for a "40-50hp tractor"

the DK40 (base) weight of 3800lbs vs the JD (base) weight of 5500 lbs.

   / Trailer Sizes/Style recomnedations for 40hp tractor #37
i don't know what the DK is across the scales but the JD weighs just under 8000 with loader/bucket and rear implement (800lbs rear mower, blade in the pics is less)

I think Eric is pulling at least 10,5K (7500 tractor plus 3K trailer plus implements)

We have a TC40D also and a 22' trailer similar to the one in the picture. Our has a beaver tail and stand up ramps. Not only do the ramps help with backing up the trailer when empty, they provide a place to bungie, if needed.

We pull ours with a Nissan Titan and/or a Toyota Tundra. Both handle it quite well.

One other difference, we position the tractor facing forward instead of the way it is pictured here.

I have been window shopping for a bigger trailer; my 16' 7k trailer is too small for the tractor I have now. I have need to have loader and mower when I take care of my parents property. So have had to put tractor/loader on flatbed trailer, and mower in second utility trailer. Fortunately they are only 30 miles away...

My NH TC40 D, with 6' wide loader and 6' rotary mower, is ~24' tip of bucket to end of rotary mower. Didn't really think about that part when we sold our old Kubota B series with loader and 4' mower that fit 16' trailer with room to spare...

So if you are looking at a 40hp+ tractor, be ready for a loooong trailer.
