E85 in the States is a different animal than what we get here. E85 is 85% ethanol, which you cannot even buy up here.

When I bought my 5.0, I did think of the flex fuel option as a bonus. Not sure why, but figured, hey, it gives me that option if I want use E85.
However, after reading the trucks manual, it turned me off to it somewhat. I already knew the mileage would drop 30% (according to the EPA), but Ford says NOT to use E85 all the time. You need to use E10 (or pure gas) occasionally. You also have to do more frequent oil changes. That tells me it's not the best thing for an engine. But I like it for an annual system cleaning.

Burning alcohol effiecently require's an engine designed for it. Then it becomes more efficient than a gas engine?

You nailed it. My take on this - Ford could build an eco-boost for E85. They could probably make it about a 12:1 compression engine and put a lot of boost on top of that and get at least as much power on E85 as they now get (burning somewhat more gallons of E85). The downside (and reason they don't do it) is that to run regular gas they would have to ****** the ignition and cut the boost way down - making it a dog on gas or E10. The real world has limitations.

Doesn't become more efficient, just makes more power. E85 is extremely tolerant of preignition and detonation. So you can crank the cylinder pressure way up, either with boost or mechanically.

I think you guys are being to harsh on the guy. He has made some valid points. I'm not a fan of ethanol for small engines or vehicles that sit but have no issue running it in my daily drivers.
