How is Bird doing?

Can't keep a good man down

I was thinking.... Still Crazy, after All These Years....... (said in a good way  , as I'm thinking of some of the hot-rod stories that Bird has confessed to :) ).

Don't ignore your family or doctor Bird, but there is something to what a surgeon said to me (re. something much less invasive than what you just went through) - "listen to your body, everybody recovers differently".

Don't push it too fast Bird, please..... but in case you want to bling-out your ride.....

Mom was recovering from a dog attack and the fill in Doctor said a 70 year old women has no business running marathons... she wanted to know how soon she could back to running.

It was really devastating for her to hear that...

Thankfully her regular Doctor was in the next time and he knew running is her passion and simply told her to listen to her body and not to overdue... as in start slow and build up...

Mom came home a new person... and went on to set records the next 5 years...

For some people being put out to pasture is the beginning of the end... we all need to feel useful... that's my story.

That reminds me of my father-in-law. When he was 83 he was sitting at a bar and the guy next to him told him he was dizzy all the time and ended up having to have bypass surgery. My father-in-law said he, too, was dizzy often and maybe it wasn't because he drinks beer every day. So he goes to his doctor and they give him a stress test. After 10 minutes they are still having trouble raising his heart rate (the old dude didn't tell them he rides a bike several hours a day while watching TV). So they finally get his heart rate up and find blockage in one artery. They give him a stent and send him home. Before leaving, he asks the doctor if he can still drink beer. The doctor ask him how many? He says one at a time. Maybe 3 or 4, but more like 6 or 7.... The doctor asks how often he does that. He says every day since he was 15 years old. Doctor is stunned. The doc finally finds out dad is like the energizer bunny and can't hold still. He puts his self propelled lawnmower in neutral and pushes it because its too slow. He vacuums the entire house every day. He rides a stationary bike a couple hours a day. He eats a bowl of cereal with 1/4 cup of milk and a banana for breakfast. Drinks beer all day while he runs around. Has a couple beers with dinner which is usually 3 full adult helpings, and goes to bed around midnight. Gets up at 6-7 and starts over again. Doc says go for it. He never gains a pound. He's 88 now. He's down to 3-4 beers a day.

My friends in Austria say beer is the perfect food group and the fountain of youth...

A lot of them are very active and fit... they drink beer... even at lunch during the workweek.

I'll alway remember Rick. He would usually drink a case of beer a night (24). He did not realize he was an alcoholic until someone asked him if he could drink 24 cans of coke a night. After that he never touched another beer.

Its not just beer. My father-in-law can put down two pops before a meal, and then 2-3 more during and after the meal. He's a little dude, about 5'6" on a good day. Maybe 165 lbs. And as mentioned, he'll eat 2-3 full sized portions. If we have desert, he'll have 2-3 pieces of cake, or 3-4 brownies, or a piece of all three pies and the cake and the cheesecake like on Thanksgiving. No one in the family can figure out why A: He isn't diabetic. B: Where the heck he puts it all. C: Why he doesn't weigh 300 pounds or D: Why he's not an alcoholic. Sometimes he stops drinking beer for a few months and switches to diet pop. Mostly in the winter.

Thanks, Roger (and all you others). They tell me I'd doing great, and I suppose they're right. My physical therapist is supposed to be here this afternoon, and then twice a week for 3 more weeks. His boss then submits a report to the cardiologist who decides whether I should go to a cardiac rehab facility for awhile. I had occasion to just look inside a cardiac rehab facility recently and it was just treadmills, a couple of kinds of stationary bikes, and such. I have a recumbent bike of my own. Anyway the yard needs mowing and they tell me I shouldn't do that until the first of the month. There's still some pain in the left upper side of my chest, but it's so minor to me as to be negligible. It doesn't keep me from sleeping or doing whatever I want to do. I do tend to feel tired more than I think I should. But that might just be due to age.:D

I had a doc recently advise me about recovering from an injury and physical therapy, and at the end I asked him how I was supposed to notice all of that above my normal aches and pains! I told the guy that unless I witness an injury or see blood, it all just blends into my normal background level nowadays.

I sure understand that.

Bird, Cardiac Rehabilitation is different than the physical therapy you are now taking. Physical therapy is getting your body muscles back in shape, but cardiac rehabilitation strengthens your heart muscle. In CR you are exercising while your heart is being monitored. In most CR programs, the first visit is one-on-one visit where they review what has happened to you, what medicines you are on, and then give you a mild exercise test so they can see what your heart is doing. They then determine what your maximum heart rate should be and plan a program based on that. During the entire program, you exercise while on the heart monitor. On the remainder of the visits (usually 24 to 36 visits, but you can quit at any time), they slowly increase the intensity of your exercise while monitoring your blood pressure, heart rate, and heart rhythm. If your rhythm gets strange or your other vital signs raise or lower, they stop you and try to determine why. This is a good way to get a feel for what you can do on your own without putting your heart at risk.

Thanks for the additional information, Don. Actually, I'd rather do that than what I'm now doing because they probably have a time set for you to be there and you KNOW in advance. Right now . . . well, I thought we were through with the home health nurse, but she called this morning and is on her way here. And with I-35E traffic, you never really know when you'll get anywhere. Of course I went to a physical therapy facility for awhile when I had my right knee replaced, and I think more was accomplished there than the home physical therapy I'm doing now.

We have a supervised Cardiac Rehab facility in house where I work...

It is like a gym in many ways plus the monitoring and review... a lot of the guys and gals really enjoy it... almost like a social event... there is an entire group standing outside in the dark before 6 am waiting for the doors to open.

The last session is at 1 pm for the day... generally older patients tend to be early birds... a few come once a week... most are either Tuesday-Thursday or Monday-Wednesday-Friday... costs about $10 per visit.

The 6 am class plays a lot of Dean Martin, Sinatra plus I hear Volari each morning at the get go.
