I'm not poo pooing lightning rods at all. They are worth the investment.

I am poo pooing leaving a 12ga in the barn. It won't do you any good when you get eaten by the cougar walking between the house and the barn... in Indiana. ;)

Or, more likely, you'll get shot with it by the meth head that's making the noise in your barn that you are going out to investigate, thinking its a cougar.... in Indiana.

The odds of being eaten by a cougar in Indiana are 1000X less than winning Powerball. Carrying a gun for Cougar protection is a waste of effort. Cougars are so stealthy and fast (they sneak up from behind) that by the time you even realized what was going on the Cougar would have its teeth in your neck ... game over!

Lions are thin skinned if there is nothing else you can do fight with all your mite! Kick, bite, punch go for it all don't lie down. The human bite is what about 200lbs?

BUT still not a bad idea to have a firearm handy when visiting your barn in the middle of the night. :)

It is a good idea to have a firearm handy when going out at night in the country and even during the day in suburbia. Several true stories. About 30 years ago I was staying in at a lakehouse in rural central Kansas. Got up about 2 to check the trot lines (Hadn't caught anything) and when I got to the top of the steps (from the dock to the yard) there were four large "canines" on the deck. Now I keep telling myself they were yotes but those guys weighed an easy hundred pounds apiece and were gray and white. Ain't no coyotes that big anywhere. Luck was with me because the second they saw me they took off. Maybe they were somebody's pack running loose but I don't think I could have fought off one of them, let alone all four.

About 20 years ago I was walking on undeveloped ground on the outskirts of Olathe, KS (a Kansas City suburb). I was going to check a shut down quarry site. A gentle wind was in my face on a pleasant sunny spring day. I was about 10 yards away from a row of rock to be crushed when three big cats jumped up. It was a mom and two cubs. They bounded to the woods about 20 yards away. The mom stopped at the woods edge, turned and stared at me. Now some want to say it was a bobcat, but bobcats don't get that big and they don't have long tails and I bet they can't cover ground as gracefully, effortlessly and quickly as those three did.

Earlier this spring, in Overland Park I was walking through a ten acre lot (on a walking trail) when two coyotes took an unhealthy interest in me and my full grown GSD. They followed us for about 200 yards and just when I thought they were gone, one of them was 10 feet behind me and closing. Luckily I turned at just the right moment and it stepped into heavy brush a few yards away. Now the area around this lot is surrounded by homes on small lots for miles but there is a pack of yotes there that has lost almost all fear of humans. A couple of weeks later they came again but stopped at 10 yards out. The second time I was ready and if they had closed much more I would have fired. Sooner or later, somebody's pet or maybe their child is going to be attacked by that pack.

A scene from "Raiders of the Lost Ark" comes to mind...encountered with a sword fight Harrison Forde pulls out his gun and shoots (i.e. "I ain't got time for this"). An earlier western comedy that I forgot about involved a discussion of "rules" before a gun-fight...a swift kick to the jewels (i.e. "there are no rules") ended that fight.

Here kitty, kitty, kitty. :) maybe some states are thinking about importing them.

In my opinion we don't need imported cougars, we need more people out deer hunting, and longer more generous deer seasons.

Got deer? Cougars could help control herds, study says | Fox News
That's interesting...I know a lot of Missouri hunters that travel north to hunt here! Now it might have something to do with the hospitality they encounter...my friend does the cooking, I provide the entertainment.

12ga in the barn is so when you are out there you have something hand to grab if needed..... during the day if you have someone come up on ya when you are out in the barn working.
