How do you store you logging/tow chain?

When I got your reply, I checked in my paper work and found that I had bought in 1998, so it would be 17 years old. What happens is when I pull the cable out, sometimes it will pull itself back in without me pulling on the rope. Will check the clutch before starting to my wood this winter.

Good idea on the clutch check. On mine when the clutch is adjusted right the pulley lever that the rope moves should go up 1-1/2" before the drum starts to turn. Yours is 4 years older than mine.

My Fransgard winch has a spring loaded brake pad under the winch drum, keeps a slight pressure on it so the cable wont self re-wind.

I'm kinda low tech.... I take my 25' of chain and simply heave it into the cab of the backhoe. It resides in the 'drivers side' rear corner. While working forward, it's out of my way, behind me. When I'm turned around using the hoe, I step on it.

This way it's always with the machine if/when I need it.

Same here.

I removed the passenger side step and replaced it with a tool box.

I used to carry them in the FEL when I thought I would need them. Now I keep them in various parts of our 90 acres - some under dirt, some under leaves - some have been stored that way for years. I estimate I have about 6 chains stored this way. Not very convenient though when you need one and cannot remember where it got dumped out of the FEL. So, now I think I will build one along the lines of the 4 to 6 inch PVC suggestions. It will be less expensive.

I'm able to hang a couple of chains on the left FEL fork. I carry a choker chain on the backhoe when it's mounted.

You know, you might have enough buried treasure in those chains, to make it worthwhile to buy a cheap metal detector and recover them. I think I would.

This is where I store chain, tow strap, hitch pins, shackles, and a few tools.

Couple pieces of slotted angle iron bolted to the ROPS with U bolts, and a cheap Harbor Freight steel toolbox bolted to this. I lined the inside with waffled rubber toolbox drawer liner to keep stuff from making too much noise.

Lots of weight way above CG.

Question for you guys with the PVC tube chain holders. Many pics I see show 3-4 chains in one tube. I assume varying lengths. Do you have any issues getting a chain out if it is on bottom? Seems like if you put in several chains the first one in would be hard to get out.

I like to carry one 20' chain and a couple 5-10' chains. Wondering if I should make two separate holders one for the long chain and one for two short pieces.
Place one hook on each chain at the "rim". Pull up the hook that corresponds to the one you need - it will snake through.

That's a great idea! I don't have a step there, but have been wondering where I was going to put a box. That is the PERFECT place.

I was wondering what happened to this thread. Was even looking for it about a week ago, to post a link to it in another thread of the same topic...

You are right, KOua! I have the metal detector but just don't know where to start in most cases - 90 acres too much. But I do recall - sort of- where generally a couple of chains might be and I will give that a try. Also, it will make the wife happy to have me out of the house. Thanks.

There you go, 3 birds with one rock.. Happy wife, good exercise, and who knows you might actually find a chain or two. If you find the rusty things, drag em behind your tractor out in the dirt or gravel for a bit, and it might shine em up?

KOua, Yeah, the Trifecta! You know, a smarter man might have figured things out sooner than I did
, i.e., not to throw a chain into the FEL after he has already lost a couple somewhere, but I always just "knew" that I would remember the chains were there before I started moving dirt.

If it makes you feel any better, I dumped the chainsaw in the dirt out of the loader bucket once...but just once.:D
