He did a nice job, but I don't like eliminating the primary filter.

Agreed. I plan to leave that as is, and plumb the Racor between the primary and the lift pump.

Do you mean between the fuel pump and the injection pump?

I am going to look for an old fashioned metal housing, glass bowl filter to replace the primary filter. The ones I am thinking of are small, no larger than the OEM plastic thing. If I find something that looks like it will work I will post it here.

No, after the first (primary) filter, and before the fuel pump (lift pump). I will mount it outside the frame rail as others have done, but from a plumbing perspective, between the first filter and the lift pump.

Having it outside the frame rail makes it easy to service, which isn't the case if it's underneath. I may put a brush guard on there, and I don't want to make things more difficult by having to drain a bowl down there.

I haven't seen one like that for many years. I think the Racor 120 comes pretty close.

By eliminating the factory filter you are getting rid of the problem. If you leave the factory filter on in front of the Racor you are still going to have problems. It does not take much for the factory filter to clog up with debris(dirt or ice). You could leave it on after the Racor but there is really no point. The factory filter it 50 microns. A Racor is 2, 10, or 30. I still have the factory filter on up at the engine but there is really no need for it. Racor says the fitler is good for 300 hours.

Here is a Racor install on a tractor with a loader.

I agree, get rid of the rear filter, it just plugs to easy.

You do need a filter after the fuel pump. If anything happens to the little, cheap fuel pump, there will be nothing to stop crap from going into your injection pump. That is what the second filter is for.

Good point!!!
