Fluorescent to LED

Yep. Certainly are alot of advantages to LED's. But simply to do it as a cost savings and blindly thinking you are saving 50% is foolish and unrealistic.

And alot to do with how well a light lights up (instant on) has to do with ballast selection

A typical t8 is inThe same 2900 lumen ballpark.....and 32 watts.

So at 28 watts for the led......you are saving 4 watts. Simple math....(not accounting for power factor or anything).......is you save 4 watts per hour of run time.

50,000 life of a led bulb.....will save 200,000 watts. Or 200kwh.

My electric cost me about 12 cents per kwh. So 50,000 hrs to save $24.
So based on my electric rates of 12 cents.....20,000hrs run time is about the break even point per bulb.

On a side note.....it is nice to see that they are pushing the lumens up to at least match that of t8's.

For the longest time, the claim was that they use half the energy. Which was correct. But they only put out 60% of the light. So you had to use more of them.

Lumen for lumen.....LED's are NOT 50% more efficient. More like 10% more efficient.

People ask me all the time when they walk in my shop.....and see 10 6- bulb fixtures and 5 4- bulb fixtures...."surprised you haven't switched to LED to save money.

Well.....I like it bright. If I wanted to save money and get less light like LED's, I'd just take half the bulbs out.

But like I said, nice to see a led option that at least matches the lumens of a standard t8. Puts things a little more in perspective now that lumens are equal. And a 32w t8 vs a 28w led......certainly not the 50% savings that led proponents keep touting

Good stuff right there. So,,, I'll just ride my T8s out.

When I have to replace because of failure I'll switch to LED.

Thanks LD1!!!!

That's my plan too. When failure occurs, switch to led.

But as of now, I have probably 250 t8 bulbs and 20 or.so spare ballasts. So I'm good for awhile.

I installed 30 T8 fixtures to light up my shop. I just wasn't going to pay $40.00 ea for that many LED's.
I'll wait till the price comes down

Not quite sure of your point? I paid $110 for 4 bulb, 4ft, T8 fixtures with bulbs. In today's market I think I could buy equivalent LEDs for the same money???

I have a number of 2 bulb 4' shop T8 lights in the basement. They are probably 10+ yrs old now and slowly starting to die. Being electronic ballasts I'm sure that's the problem (actually surprised they lasted that long). Looking at replacement ballasts and see the prices. Ouch. Time to move on?

I put 6- 4' LED lights in my 40' X 60' shop and it is like daylight at night!!
I bought them at Rural King for $24.99 each.
They are 4500 lumens, come with 5' cord and a female plug so you can daisy chain them and a pull chain!!
Have 2 rows of LED bulbs 4' long.

6 @ 4500 lumens each is about like 6 2-bulb t8's.

Don't sound like much at all for a 40x60

The 8’ two tube fluorescent fixtures in my shop are now 18 years old. I’m changing all out because they’re slowly on their down hill run. They’re 16’ above shop floor and I’m not crazy about getting on a 14’ ladder to replace tubes. A few have probably got failed or failing ballasts. If I don’t save a dime, in power cost, but never have to mess with them again, I’m a winner.

When I take down the existing fixtures, they will be repurposed and possibly converted to LED, in some our other buildings that ave lower ceilings.

Here's 8 - 4ft - 4 bulb T8s in a 42x50.

I'll add, the more "junk" you have in a shop, the more light it takes. Everything absorbs light.
