When to use four wheel drive?

Yep. It's only not doing that when making a gradual turn. Going straight "pull" scrubbing. Turning sharp "push" scrubbing.

The only difference terrain makes is "masking" the scrubbing so the operator can't detect it. Your concrete floor offers no hiding place.

The concrete floor or any other hard surface is harder on tires and drivetrain. Dirt, grass, soil and gravel will all give a little, so that slippage isn't as destructive.
I just look down at the lever to see if I'm in 4wd, or wait until the front binds or I start spinning.

My L5740HSTC does not have a 4wd light either, I checked. Really wish it did.
And I know there is no indicator light on my small MF/Iseki 4wd.

That confirms it then. I had never saw a 40 series without one. Bummer. My old L4400 had one.......

So far on my t4.75 I've only used 4wd when using the box blade or other ground engaging implements when needed. My 7 foot blade weighs 625# according to Taylor-Pittsburgh but with the scarfiers down will spin the t4.75 in certain conditions. I'm of the opinion to use 4wd when needed only. Just my thoughts. We used 2wd row crop tractors while we farmed in the 1930's-1980's.

I started in the early 60's...
My grandfathers started in the 30's...
Before that it was mules...
My father actually broke his nose with a mule dragging him a hundred feet or do when he was a lad while plowing...
I think they put kerosene his nose to help it heal...

Have to redesign the gauge cluster, wiring harness, add a bracket and switch.

Sounds simple but I would bet adding that indicator would add $1k to each unit.

The problem is not the parts. It is the redesign, tooling and production change where the real costs are.

Once a new design is agreed on, I don't think the incremental cost would be anywhere that much. Simply a contact
switch on off and a light bulb. Once upon a time I used to own a Radio Shack and I think component cost, not much. Now if that were the only reason to make a new dash, well sure, nutso expensive to just add that. Wonder how much it cost to add the DEF/emissions indicators on new tractors. Aren't there regen lights? (none of mine have this)
I'm thinking add it with the next revision.

Whether I put my 4WD tractors in 2WD depends on the property. Where I live it is mostly sloped and if the tractor is on pavement it is in 2WD, otherwise 4WD. On one farm where it is mostly flat and has no pavement, they are in 2WD unless using the loader or box blade, etc. On the other place where there are largely hills and minimal pavement they stay in 4WD.

If there's no concern on tearing up turf/ground (and you're not on a hard surface) then there's no issue with running in 4wd all the time. As can be seen here in this thread, there are MANY reasons why 4wd is beneficial. That said, I look to use 4wd only when I feel that I need it. Used to be said that 4wd is for use when 2wd can't do the job- when you find you're stuck or losing traction then go 4wd and get the heck out of where you are! But, as noted here, there are several cases in which you ought to be in 4wd BEFORE any signs of trouble: hills and such. I run 4wd when doing heavy loader work (scooping; if I need to turn with a heavy load I'll pop out of 4wd- if, that is, it doesn't compromise traction or safety); also when doing heavy ground engagement activities.

I have a good sized, car swallowing county ditch that is on the edge of my property. I'll look to be in 4wd when mowing along the edge so that should I feel any slight give I can turn the wheel and throttle away from the ditch: the extra pull up front can be the difference between a long day of pulling a tractor out of the ditch and one of a sore rear end (from puckering real hard).

If my ground is a little wet and I'm going straight I'll look to run in 4wd to reduce the chance of rears breaking loose (and messing up the ground).

When you're only partially stuck and want to make sure to bury both axles instead of just the rear!

My only question might be, do you leave your 4wd truck engaged all the time?? Do you engage it as soon as you leave pavement? Do you engage it when driving across grass? Do you only engage it when 2wd fails??? Inquiring minds want to know???

If my loader is on the tractor the tractor stays in 4WD. (I remove it to mow)
If I'm working on hills the tractor stays in 4WD.
As far as my truck, its snowing or snow on the road my truck stays in 4WD.

With my truck, 2wd on pavement, I engage 4wd as soon as I leave the hard road going to camp. 2wd on my lawn unless I'm moving a trailer, and 4wd in any other grass. LOL!

Reasoning.....FL dirt roads are usually soft sandy surface. The truck tracks better in 4wd.
Heavy daily afternoon rains sometimes leave washouts and soft spots in the road.

I prefer to be prepared and keep momentum up then to start getting stuck then try to get out of it.

I also feel that it is better to cycle the tcase and front diff actuators regularly rather then let them sit in one position.
