Lost my brakes coming down Raton Pass in NM back in the 80's. Stayed on the blacktop, there were no truck ramps by the time I needed one, stayed (mostly) in my lane, and thankfully, everyone got out of my way on the way down. Something about a semi coming up behind you at over 120 mph in the fast lane, blaring the air horn, and flashing highbeams. Folks actually paid attention and got out of my way.

One of the few times in my life I was "certain" I was going to die. Looked over at the rookie riding shotgun with me, and said this was probably it. He asked if we should jump, to which I said, we'd die for sure then, just tighten your seatbelt all the way tight and hang on.

Once we came out of the pass, it took MANY MILES before the truck slowed down enough I could put it back in top gear (8th) and throw the engine brake back on. Then it took MILES of Jake brake and downshifting before I got it slowed down enough to take a side exit that followed parallel to the interstate. Jaked it down to a crawl in 1st, but rolled right through the parking brake, even popping the safety valves wouldn't stop us. Finally got the rookie to come out of his terror-coma and throw the wheel chocks out in front of us, and rolling over those actually stopped us.

Took the rest of our convoy (military) 20 minutes to catch up to us.

Good times.

And that's how the name Slowpoke Slim was born?

Lol. Nice one.

Actually, back in those days, I was known by other names, that would just look like "*****" if I typed them here. But it was always "Sarge" to my face.

I can't believe that box side isn't crinkled.

I mean from pushing in sideways, not down. I mean, you can press it in with your finger (that HD Tin).

A friend who is **** about truck appearance and care was loading his Bosses FANCY Black 6.6 Chev. He had to move the truck for something and a strap got under the wheel, and it did crinkle in the whole box side. He felt terrible.

And no, the strap did not break.

Well there you go. Your friend had the crinkled fender while was using a Chevy and the picture above is a Ford. :D ;)

I can't say that I have any issue with that. Looks like he has six 2" straps holding that thing in. Two from the back bumper going forward to the truck's bed rail middle pockets. Two from the middle roll bar going backward to the truck bed rail rear pockets. Two going down from the front roll bar to the truck step bars. All of the strap ends are tied up out of the way, or tied down elsewhere for extra support. It would only weigh +/- 1600 lbs, which is fine for that F250.

Might look funny, but that is easily overkill for the weight of that side-by-side and there's nothing wrong with using a few extra straps just to be safe. No way that is going to move forward or back, up or down, or side to side.

Am I missing something?

That it will act like a sail when going down the road?

I saw a guy dragging a stump behind his pickup going down the road. In his defense it was on a short rope and wasn’t loosing dirt everywhere.

Not that much more than sitting on a trailer. It's not ideal, but it wouldnt scare me going down the road.

Wonder how long it would take to grind a stump on the asphalt? They don't burn well.

I’ve never seen air applied air brakes. I’ve never seen a truck that didn’t lock down with a loss of air pressure. Admittedly I don’t deal with big trucks very often.
The service brakes are all air applied. The spring is only for parking. I have only seen 1 axle per vehicle with the spring brakes (1 on truck, 1 on trailer) The ones with 2 clamps have a spring. The parking release pressure from the dash button is separate from the service apply pressure. I know this not from internet search, but because I changed them out alot. The ones with 2 clamps will mess you up if take the back clamp off! Why would you take the clamps off anyway? The typical failure was leaky diaphragm. You could take it apart and replace the diaphragm. That way you would not have to cut the rod on the replacement chamber to length. We had a heavy steel box with large slots to put the spring brake chambers in so we could cut the spring with a torch before throwing in the dumpster. They were afraid one would kill a garbage man or something. Also had to "cage" brakes sometimes to allow a wheel to move freely (usually on a trailer) the spring brakes come with a long bolt, you screw it in all the way and it holds the spring off. It's a pain in the butt. Probably 4" long and takes alot of effort the whole way with a ratchet.

Doesn't look like any more than one of the 5 wheel RV trailers.

And if you'd like go back a nother generation and get air over hydraulic brakes, then you can really worry.
