10K Deck over tilt or with ramps

/ 10K Deck over tilt or with ramps #21

For all the reasons everyone else has mentioned. Total trailer weight, tongue weight etc. you will need a weight distributing setup with a tractor that heavy regardless. It’s my experience that once you begin carrying additional implements with your tractor you lose all options of moving the tractor around on the trailer to dial in tongue weight. At that point you need to have a tongue weight scale to figure out how to load your implements around the tractor to get everything dialed in.

A tongue weight scale is certainly a good idea, but who is actually going to buy one?
The tongue weight can actually be measured with a standard bathroom scale. (Go to e-trailer website - check out how to do it).
Measuring the tongue weight is a slightly awkward process, but if you always load your trailer in a similar manner, tongue weight does not need to be measured every time.

Thanks for the info guys. Still don't know which tractor I'm getting because I'm looking for used to stay away from regen and this is the reason for the wide range. My car trailer is just bare minimum for most times I use it, but if I get rid of it I don't really want a 4K trailer to haul around for everything. Don't want a GN because I have a lid on the truck.

Guess I'll be getting one with ramps and decide later if it will be deck over. Maybe forget about using it to haul the tractor and just use the dump and 10 ton tag

I often use my GN 20K trailer to haul light loads. Seems kinda silly at the time. But sure like it when hauling my 12K tractor. No way to have the perfect trailer for everything.

Let us know what you choose.

Have to many trailers and need more then my car trailer. Going to buy a tractor (60 to 80 hp) which will be in the 6K to 8K load range. May get some other attachments, but for right now, just trying to figure issues with two different type trailers. Plan to use a 2 5/16 or pintle but like 2 5/16 better due to less wobble/noise.

The tractor will fit between a 102 inch width trailer with fenders but a tilt trailer could make things easier in one area, but may have issues in another. What issues have been found with these different types?

I do have a 10 Ton pintle hitch trailer, but it is real heavy and would need to haul using the dump truck with a large load. I want to haul using the 2500 pickup

I prefer a deck over tilt, no fenders when loading pallets, tanks, odd shaped stuff. Mine is a hydraulic tilt with wireless remote, so I can adjust angle on demand. A 60-80 hp tractor can load on most dovetail trailers without using ramps. I prefer a pintle for ease of attaching but a back up camera and 2 5/16 ball are pretty easy too.

Of course, a roll-off trailer would be way cool. Load tractor on platform, winch platform onto trailer. switchable with dumpbox, cargo box, whatever.....but that all gets pricey quick and storage is a problem. Most of the time quicker, easier and cheaper to call in a hauler.

Sounds like we are kinda in the same spot although I dont have a truck that can really utilize my 10t trailer anymore

My normal trailer is a 18ft 7K trailer, good trailer but I'm regularly at its limits of size and capacity. My goal is to replace the 24ft 10t and 18ft 7K trailers with a 14-16K 20-22ft trailer.

I've been looking at trailers most of this year and found that a decent built 10K and a 14K were so close in weight it was worth it for the extra capacity. Typically I added more weight to the trailer by going from 16in to 12in OC cross members then I did going from a 10k to a 14k.

There are a lot of pros and cons on the deck over: taller deck height, more weight, manuverability can be a little more difficult.

Pros are you're not limited by equipment width, no fenders to fight with, easier the down points with a full rub rail.

I honestly still haven't decided to get, however if i take the tilt deck out of the equation then I'd get a deckover.

They might fit your needs, I wrote them off for me as the fenders still interfere with side loading. They seem to be popular with wide vehicles like rock crawlers where they need the extra width but dont want a deck over. I'd rather have a full deck over for my needs personally or go with a regular low bed tilt.

It’s not awkward with a tongue weight scale and they cost under $200. I have one and I can dial in my weight perfect. No screwing around with bathroom scales.
