You can do that with most that I've seen. But none of them can account for a spider, wasp, bird or similar. One of mine has the front road in view, so traffic could trigger it. Reasons why I don't have motion or alarm set on any of them.

For motion detection, I use real motion detectors with "pet aware" logic built in so they don't go off at every tiny movement. They're wireless ZWAVE based motion detectors, I use a Universal Devices controller. I have programs set to alert me on low battery, loss of signal, and motion. In the programs, they pull camera stills and include them with the message.

Yeah my Reolink cameras can be set for specific motion area and sensitivity. My biggest problem has been spiders. I have to spray my outdoor cameras every few days to keep spiders from getting in them. They absolutely LOVE to climb back and forth over the lens and build just enough web to make them record constant. At night the bugs flying keep them recording in the summer. Set the sensitivity too low and the deer can walk right by but NO setting prevents recordings of bugs and spiders.

Those Vivotek cameras sound pretty pricey and don't look all that impressive.

My Reolink cameras have a wifi distance of 300 ft or so. I have the quality set DOWN to 1080P. Mainly because windows media player doesn't recognize the higher resolution they are capable of. The RLC 411WS model I have doesn't have sound or pan and tilt but they make models that do. By the time I bought and set up two cameras on a 100W solar panel and deep cycle battery I was in for a little under $400.

Here is an image capture from one of my cameras.

Bunnies, HA! Motion detection on cameras mostly sucks in outdoor environments. A cloud passing over the sun or the wind rustling the grass will trigger motion alerts. If you have time, patience, and your camera has the options, sometimes you can set a specific part of the field of view and the sensitivity levels to minimize false alerts (the Vivotek cameras I recommended have such settings).

This is one area where Arlo shines. Since the camera is not rolling 24/7 (it stays dormant to conserve battery life), the motion detection is not based on frame-by-frame image comparison as most camera motion detection algorithms are. The camera has an embedded PIR sensor, which is what turns on the camera, establishes a connection to the base station, and starts streaming data to the cloud (in the blink of an eye). A PIR sensor is much better about false positives. It senses changes in heat; like an ultra-simple thermal camera. So in order for something to trigger the Arlo, it has to have body heat. Shadows, rustling leaves, none of that sets off the camera. I have had wasps set it off, when they buzz right in front of the camera for long enough, but it's not common.

Yep, you change change the sensitivity and field of movement with Lorex also

I'll chexk out Lorex.

I actually have little use for motion detection. Can't use it,in the shop because Willard (dog) lives in there. He has access to outside thru his own door so would constantly trip the outdoor cameras as well. Then throw in the constant flow of wildlife thru the area and I think they might become a nuisance.

My primary expectation would be to record activity that I could refer back to if I was robbed for example. Is motion detection needed for that?

Secondary use would be for Terry to view the property before entering when coming home at night or after being gone for awhile.

What other benefits am I missing?

I personally wish they would remove the word "security" when used with cameras. I mean, as far as joe blow public goes.

You don't want to get robbed, that's what REAL security is about. Having footage after you have been robbed is quite useless in my way of thinking, and certainly not security at all.

Obviously a camera isn't going to prevent robbery. It's going to do little to discourage it. Daily news stories of robberies include camera footage.

I live in a sparsely populated county. My hope would be that my friends and neighbors could look at the pics and help me locate the offender. Just to visit.

I have an 8 camera 1080p Lorex System with a DVR and a 1tb hard drive. I can monitor and play back right on my phone. Don't get anything less than 1080p cameras because the video sucks. These are wired cameras with BNC Cables. This system will also send you e-mail alerts when motion is detected. But that could be a bunny in the back yard. Lorex has their own app called FLIR, doesn't use a web browser and works great.

That is what I have. The fox video I posted in another thread here came off one of my cameras.

IF it does discourage a crime, then really a fake one will work equally well. Actually, I prefer real, but defective ones! I have been in the security bus for almost thirty years. I sell camera systems to institutions and business where they are useful. I sell door intercoms with cameras that are useful. I won't sell residential camera systems, because I find them misunderstood and for the most part useless in preventing crime against my customers, and THAT is my business.

Go smash your hand with your biggest hammer. It will cause less pain then the Amcrest setup.

To the OP- the 兎asiest cameras work with WiFi. Once you get good WiFi to the areas that you want cameras their are several choices. I tried several that didn稚 work as advertised. I settled on the iSmart cameras. They are indoor cameras but I can look through the windows.

I have AmCrest. At first, I loved it. Very nice out-of-the-box setup and kit included 2 real long + 2 60' cables so nothing extra needed to buy (except monitor, but had an old one to re-purpose). Setup was super easy and just downloading their app from google playstore then scanning the QR code on box had it working on my phone. 100x easier setting everything up and having it running than I thought it would be. Very good picture quality for inexpensive cameras on BNC cable. Included HDD holds about a week's worth of 4 cameras recording 24/7 (not using motion detect).

Then the box started to make a racket. Investigate and the fan was chewing into its housing. Was an odd size like 50mm (can't remember exactly) but had to special order since none of the typical PC sized fans I had in pile of old computer junk were right. But simple fix.

Then one camera started only working intermittently. Then barely, then not at all. Turns out it is the connection at the box. Something wrong there that I figured was a broken solder I could easily fix, but no luck figuring it out. Wiggling that connection makes the camera work. But otherwise, it just displays black. No idea what caused tat to fail - not like I move the box around and once set up, never moved the cables around. No stress on the cables pulling on that connection.

So I went from an AmCrest fan to "never again"....oddly that change in attitude toward the brand happened right after warranty was up :) That's as long as it worked right.

But we did have some people going through neighborhood breaking into cars and was able to give local PD a thumbrive with excellent HD pictures of their faces. So although some problems and it only 75% works after a couple years, when I did need recorded footage from it, it was there and fairly easy to retrieve and download.

The phone app.....when it works, its great. Only works half the time though. Might be the app, the system, my phone, or my wireless router. No idea why it sometimes chooses to work or not work. But is kinda cool to be away from home and see everything at the house.

For my remote property (no utilities, no internet), I use Moultrie A30i trail cameras. Not the best cameras, but I like the Moultrie steel lock boxes that fit those that can be secured with a Python cable, regular padlock, or both. The "i" versions (A-30i, A-40i, etc) don't have red glowing lights at night so don't give themselves away. They work pretty well and i just have several scattered but overlooking each other along with watching their designated areas. For that application, I'm pretty happy with their performance. No sensitivity setting so LOTS of pictures of tree branches blowing in the wind, but that's only complaint. Great pic quality even at night and last a long time on the inexpensive Amazon Basic brand AA batteries.
