Putting the R1 vs R4 debate to rest?

15 bags of 46 in the front bucket and a full spreader on the 3ph and my tractors ride better than my car. It's all relative.

Not that I am doubting you, but I AM curious... what is your car???

Interesting. I farm. R1's only. If I went out with R4's and a fellow farmer saw me, I'd be laughed at.....

Yup.

Just like the flatlander that moves to VT and decides to run "ALL SEASONS" all winter long. Or the wannabee drag racer that goes to the track with his Charger DEMON on the stock tires.

As (I believe) I said upthread, tires* are a compromise. You have to decide what's most important to you - traction (on what surface??? for instance Turfs are widely accepted as the best for snow), longevity, treadwear, puncture resistance, weight, cost and probably some others I haven't thought to mention.

*EVERYthing is a compromise. Name me one thing that doesn't compromise something and I'll eat my hat (note: I don't wear a hat).

I have R 4 and if I would buy another trac it would get the R 1. That is just they work better for my usage. On the loader and R 1 if you are having problem with the fronts replace them with a heaver sidewall and put tubes in them. I wanted the R4's for the extra wide of the trac and the extra weight when they were filled. The R 4 slide sideways in soft ground where the R 1's don't the R 1 cleans them selves in the mud. I can live with what I have for now

My thought at the time was that R1 would have probably let me drive out and, maybe, not sucked down so far to begin with.

Boy, your pic looks familiar. Nope. Didn't matter what you had for a tire. Had to winch this out with a tow tuck. Even my 5200lb Durango wouldn't budge it.

Most people buy R4s. They are a compromise between turfs and ags. Plus they are built strong for construction use. I went with R1s simply because my tractor rarely sees pavement. The fronts might squash more than the R4 would but it still handles the load. I'm careful not to make sharp turns with a fully loaded bucket. But the extra tractor is worth it. Tractors just don't spin the wheels very fast so they don't throw the mud to keep the valleys between the lugs clear. Ags with their wider gap helps the mud fall out.

Stuck like that. All you need is an old surplus cylinder with a good long stroke and shackles or hooks at each end. Some hose and plug into a remote. Probably cheaper than the tow. If you have something to attach it to, there doesn't seem to be a limit as to what you can unstick. Also, GREAT for being alone, and stuck.

Seen in action, turf tires, working in very wet conditions. DSC02959.JPG

It really is one of the few times in twenty or so years that Turfs gave me grief.

R1s clean because of the tread angle. Wheel speed not required.

A winch on the Durango was actually pulling it toward the tractor. Plus the tractor wanted to tip over so had to chain it to an opposite tree. Thought about chaining the Durango down but was concerned that it would ride up and wreck the front bumper. With some clever boom maneuvers on the tow truck and $150 later, she was unstuck. One of those gasoline powered, portable winches may have been the tool for that day.

Love that R510.

That doesn't look so bad. Did you try a chain to the bucket, with the other end attached to a tree? Crappy picture I know, but that's how I got out of this one. (And in case you can't tell, those are R-1s.)
