Someone asked about trees being grafted, yes that is how you start them out, a scion is grafted to a chosen rootstock. We have 6 varieties. The majority are Hewes crab and virginia Winesap.
We went in tonight and my wife pruned while I swapped out the cutter for the sprayer and loaded it up, the. I sprayed the whole thing. She got about 1/4 pruned. This week will be a lot of labor on dry days, to get the rest done and spray again. Then we just. Wait a year to see what occurs.

What spray do you use for fire blight? Hope things work out, I hate to lose trees of any kind, but these are probably more near and dear than other trees.

There are a number of things that can be used. Copper is effective. But it can cause russet on apples if sprayed at this stage. There are a number of antibiotics that can be used. We are using streptomycin. The same drug you would take for Tuberculosis.

Looks like Lichens. You can spray the tree with a copper fungus spray, but they normally don't cause any issues if left as is. If you do spray them they sometimes turn bright colored and swell up, then they slowly die and wear off eventually.

I agree that it is Lichen. It is not harming your tree. However the presence of lichen usually indicates that the tree is in poor health. It could be anything from nutrient issues, to disease. How old are the trees? What is the PH like ?

I’ve been very bad about maintaining my apple trees. This one is PaulaRed, over 10 yrs old and has never grown over 6 ft high. Maybe it was a drawf. It had the prettiest blooms this year. IMG_3981.JPG

My other 2 are northern spy (which I topped last yr and didn’t get pruned this winter)

And a golden delicious which I also cut back a lot last yr.

I haven’t been good with spraying, like I usually forget.

Terry bought two Apple trees that I planted in our back yard by our old Pear tree last month. One is a 4 in 1 but I can't remember the varieties.

Now I know the guys to go to when I have questions about my fruit trees!!!!

Ovrszd, I joke with my wife, that she and I together are almost one decent apple farmer. There is so much to know and learn, it makes you wonder how some apple trees grow wild in the forest. And yet, they do.
