1978 Ford 2600 and 2020 Kubota BX23S
Been considering buying a new tractor. Mostly been looking at Kubota or Kioti. Done a lot of research and mostly settled on buying a new Kioti.

Had a friend list their 2010 Kubota B26 TLB (hydrostat) for sale. Only 275hrs, has the ROPS roof/cover. Drove it and sounds and runs great. They want 24000, which seems a little high to me after checking tractorhouse and equipmenttrader.

So, if i cant talk them down, is 24000 a fair price? Any suggestions on getting them down to around 20000? They seemed pretty firm on it...

I can get a 2020 Kioti CK3510 for 28000.

Yes, im aware of the difference in HP. But a kubota with no warranty vs a new tractor for 4000 more with a 6 year warranty?

Thoughts? Suggestions? Opinions? Thanks!

It depends on the use. Tractors are a little different than most tools. You can think of it this way: The Kioti has a warranty because it has not been proven in use.
With 275 hours on the Kubota, that machine is proven to work exactly as it is doing now and can be expected to continue doing so for thousands of hours - but only if the owner is the kind of person who you would want to buy something used from.

I buy most tools and equipment used, always have.... and am always on the lookout for good used tools. The ones that I pursue are sought after models at the top of their price range because of their good condition. The downside is that it does take a few years to know if a machine is going to become a "classic" or "sought after model". The B26 is such a model.

My experience is that on sought after models, a knowledgeable owner can put a few hundered hours on a machine and - with the aid of his warranty if needed - actually make it better than something unknown but brand new. It's worth asking why is he selling and also take a look at the state of the rest of his machinery. Past that, the one to interest me would have a complete set of owner's manuals, maintenance records of some sort, maybe some other literature, tools, spares, or accessories. All those are reallygood signs.

If something used is priced "at the market or below" frankly I simply avoid it. I don't even go look. The reason being that most of the time those are things being sold because the owner didn't like them. I'm looking for something that is being sold for a completely different reason. And I never object to paying top dollar because I'm looking for a classic model in top condition.

Does that reasoning apply to your friend's used B26? I don't know. How does the rest of his equipment look? And why is he selling? The answer to those two questions would be what would make my decision - not the price or the hours.

The B26 TLB are built tough and the Kioti might not measure up. This series is often found in rental fleets or commercial operators. If this is a non-commercial unit in great shape for the hours the price is reasonable. It's worth extra if it's never been a rental or commercial and you can trust the seller.

Looks like new it's now a $38,000 unit.

Good info, rScotty! I appreciate your insight. The lady that is selling it is someone i have known for years. Unfortunately, her husband is in the later stages of Dementia and so they no longer need the tractor, hence the need to sell it. He used it very little and it is in great condition overall. There is a busted spot in the front right grill but other than that it runs great.

That sounds like one that would be very high on my list of desirable used machines. Especially that model. The somewhat higher price would be less important to me. I like it when someone values their used machine enough to ask top dollar.

Mat, thanks for the input. It's almost like new. It hasn't been treated rough at all. Was purchased new by the owner and never used commercially.

I see the point about a new one being 38000. But a 10 year old unit for 24000? I feel like it should be around 21000

I like your take on the situation. Never really thought about it that way. Are there any things I should look for since it's probably been mostly sitting for a while? I drove it and tried all the hydraulics and everything performed normally in my opinion. But I am a rookie tractor user with about 3 years of experience on a 1978 Ford 2600 LOL

Mahindra doesn't build such a unit to begin with to compete with the B-26 although by going up to the size you are looking at with them it should except possibly the speed and the agility of the operations. Yes the unit is not new but it is extremely low hours.

The Kubota is a HD commercial grade offering. Only 275 hours of residential use? I bet 98% of them listed have been worked hard and put away wet in a commercial or rental environment.

What is the Kioti going to be worth in 5 years and what is the Kubota going to be worth?

Good thoughts John. Not sure how much resale value Kioti carries versus Kubota. Im sure Kubota is much higher

Depending on the dealer, the B26 was offered with a range of options. Does it have a spare backhoe bucket? Does it have the 3pt kit? Accessory hydraulic outlets? An upgraded lighting kit? Anything else? A few of those would easily make up the price difference and are an example of the value of buying low hr. used.

In tractors 10 years of being stored out of the weather are nothing. How it is used and maintained is everything. Tractors don't really have a model year like cars do. Tractors go by serial number. Typically a model is made in a factory run and then warehoused until sold.

You can feel that for months and never find one that nice at any price.

You are seeing that right now. Also Kubota is the ONLY player in the industrial grade compact TLB space.

Thanks Rick, So a B26 vs a L2501? Are yall saying the B26 is more of a commercial machine vs some of the other Kubota models? This man only used this for cleaning up a few ditches and moving some rocks from a slide behind his house. I doubt it has ever been pushed to any kind of limits

/ Used B26 TLB or New Kioti CK3510 #17
Yes. exactly. Kubota's TLBs are not a true commercial machine, but tending that way and more heavily built throughout. That is what makes them more expensive than tractors with add-on loaders and backhoes, and the higher price is why you see fewer TLBs than Tractors. On the TLB, the backhoe is standard and the 3pt hitch is an attachment. On tractors it's the other way around.

Sounds like the guy knew what he was doing. His work seems more landscaping than growing crops or gardening, so he got the right tool for the work you describe even if it did cost more.

Does his backhoe have the hydraulic thumb option? If so, there's the price difference right there.

I have been working at a Kubota dealer since we moved south in Sept 2017. We have sold several hundred B and L series tractors in that time and one each of the TLB models. We have worked on a small handful of others. They just are not that common. Same story when I was up in NY.

Can you see yourself using a backhoe?
That's easily worth the difference.
And the TLB is a more rugged machine.

I got them down to 23800. Im checking with my local bank to see what kind of financing options I have. Looks like a 5 year loan at around 4.99 percent. Any experts on here with better options? I dont have that kind of cash to pay right now....
