Homemade fence unroller

My neighbor tried to order a Titan wire fence unroller from TSC. After 2 weeks, TSC told him that it could not be shipped to our local store.... REALLY? He ordered it in the store, right off of their own website!

So, fall back and punt.... he bought a carry-all at a third of the price. I made a frame to go between the carry-all arms, put some steel plate on it, and welded a bracket on for the post. Added a c-channel frame to the back, hinged at the top to lower onto the center post. Everything is bolt together, so it can be multipurpose as a simple carry-all too!

Great piece of engineering. My only concern is that it "appears" as though the bottom bolt on the vertical shaft to hold the fence roll, may protrude enough to get hung up in the fence roll. Could be just the angle of the pic, but wanted to share my 2¢.

There was a good TBN thread here awhile ago on farm fence u nail guns battery operated vs pneumatic . I think the battery operated one was a DeWalt .

Great piece of engineering. My only concern is that it "appears" as though the bottom bolt on the vertical shaft to hold the fence roll, may protrude enough to get hung up in the fence roll. Could be just the angle of the pic, but wanted to share my 2¢.

I was concerned about that too, so the bolt is sideways to start, we'll see if it does snag. A simple solution already planned if it does, is a roller guide at the base. Just some 4" bolts vertically, with some 1" pipe around them. I'll mount them just behind and off to the sides (about 10 and 2 o'clock). Might add one on the top arm also to keep the fence roll vertical.

he will have a total of about $265 into the homemade one.

For my needs and price I think I would go with air power . Seeins I have the compressors/gennys/ air lines already and I don't do it for a living . Plus I got some two or three sets of fenceing pliers .

Thought about that when I was first laying it out. The problem that I visualized was trying to find the hole when the fencing roll was loaded. The second part to that was reaching five ft into the air to "load" the bar through the top and then down into the hole....

I built one out of scrap that mounts to my 3 point hitch.. . . . The large round piece freely spins. A bar slips thru roll of fencing, thru hole in bottom plate. Pin on top locks it in place. Works slick. No jambing and can hold it down near ground level. Best part...just so plasma cut time. It was all built from scraps except for mounting pins. Funny thing though.... i cant recall for the life of me why i had that old steel stock on my racks. Was barely rusted. I cant recall what i was planning on making with it.

I have 80 acres. 1320 x 2640 = one and a half miles of four strands of barbed wire. My neighbor has a 4-strand, commercial made, barbed wire roll holder that fits on the 3-point. I tried it. It became IMMEDIATELY obvious that a skilled person had to follow this "operation" to ensure the fours strands did not tangle.

I dropped back to a pipe across the 3-point and a single roll of barbed wire. Even this required skill, patience and time. However, it was miles better than trying to carry a roll and unroll it manually.

My biggest problem - my land is NOT flat and using the tractor only worked in about half of fence stretching project.

The remaining fence line - two people carrying a roll on a pipe and walking the fence line - pulling the barbed wire out as we went.

Working evening hours & weekends - took one and a half years to complete the entire fence. I still retain the barbed wire scars on my lower legs and forearms from this project. This was completed in 1983 and still stands - straight & true. I check & maintain my fence line twice annually.

On mine i lift the rod out nearly all the way, till it tilts and wedges itself, then i simply lift the roll onto the platform. I straighten the rod and it falls down. I tilt roll of fence and align the rod into hole. I can install a roll of wire by myself. But easier with 2 people.

Perhaps an easier way would be to just take a 3"-4" diameter steel pipe sleeve (4" tall/long) and slip it around your existing vertical and it should cover the protruding bolt. Don't weld it, just leave it loose. Installing a bunch of bolts and 1" pipe sleeves is a really neat idea, but might be overkill. Just my 2¢.

Question: How do you pull the fence tight? The Tarter unroller has a locking bar to hold the fence.
