Yeah no doubt. I'll probably makeshift one or use a hatchet sideways. I'll also pick up a planer, power wire brush, and a torch. Tomorrow will be fun!We dress/hew sawed beams (very similar to what is in your pics, boxed boards are no different...a sharp adz will take very shallow chips) all the time...an adz will take out smooth, shallow chips that leaves an authentic appearance that is easy to stain...If the chips start leaving open grain reverse directions...

I've got wire brushes for my angle grinder that I can test out. For the hand hewn look the planer and brick hammer or hatchet will be my next move. I would like I get that aged look in addition to hand hewn.You suggested a claw hammer except with a solid tip. A brick hammer would fit the bill. Also they make carving blades for an angle grinder that would probably work better than a wire wheel. A wire wheel will eat out the summer growth leaving the harder winter growth replicating age and wear but not so much the hand hewn look.
