Yanmar 186D broken shaft

I believe the hydraulics are basically ok, the 3 point hitch works very good all the time, the 2nd, 3th and neutral position form the powershift always work fine.

On my YM2610, the PowerShift is down below. I've been doing massive amounts of land clearing this past summer and realized the shift selector actually wearing a groove from the the cover plate. I took the cover plate off and smoothed it out some on the grinder. WOW, that cover plate material is thin, but hard like diamonds. My grinder had to work hard to remove even the slightest steel. Then I took a hand file to remove the burrs and slightly round the pointed corners. Remarkable. The PowerShift is sooooo smooth now.

With all that said, behind the cover plate and the side access cover taken off, there is a pivot and spring mechanism. Look at your machine to see if adjustments can be made.

Hey, I found pixs on my computer when I tweaked this. See attached.

Update:

Today I took the air intake off and tested the thermo start.
Turned the key to the left, first smoke and after 11 seconds flames!

However, starting the tractor is dramatic.....

Temperature is 2 degrees celcius

first the preheating procedure
push the throttle lever to max
then, having the compression lever pulled, turn the key into the start position
at maximum speed release the compression lever
there's smoke from the exhaust
however the engine won't start.

After a number of cycles it finally starts!

When the engine has run for a while and is warmed up it restarts immediately.

The battery is 3 months old and fully charged: OPTIMA RED TOP RT S 4.2 STARTACCU 12 VOLT 50 AH / 815 CCA

Any suggestions?

Edit:
Also took the hydraulic regulator off for cleaning and inspections for blockage related the the reverse gear issue

You're doing everything right. Maybe repeat the Thermostart ritual several times to pre-warm it.

Low compression (wear) can cause difficult starting. Warming the tractor with a light under it and a tarp over it, would make it think it is already warm.

On the next larger tractor (YM240) I bought a starter rated 2kw to replace the old 1.4kw starter. It cranks faster and I suspect this could stretch out the time needed before overhaul.

OK, I will check the starter, since it is an older tractor maybe someone replaced it by the wrong type :)

Also test the starting procedure repeating the thermostart several times.

Anything possible to fix wear? install new springs?

The Hoye site says the TS can be done longer than 15 seconds. Maybe go 20 seconds and see if there is an improvement. I wouldn't go beyond 30 seconds.

Yes, the 2Kw starter is awesome. And has the newer technology like today's cars have. No starter solenoid coil, only a gear offset reduction to spin things faster!

I checked the startmotor it says JS729 which is like original specs.

Also removed the regulator for the powershift and installed a new gasket.
After replacement started the tractor and still no movement in reverse gear.
Then after a while tried again and it worked like it should, so hope the new gasket did the trick!

New question: how much can this tractor lift on the 3 point hitch?
The service manual I have says 420 Kg:

But there's some different data mentioning 300 Kg:

Which one is right?

Maybe replacing the gasket dislodged crud that was blocking something. Good to hear it shifts ok now.

I think even 300 Kg (660 lbs) on the back is optimistic. Maybe that's measured at the pins, not per later industry standard which is 24 inches back.

I tried mounting my 3-point backhoe, claimed 750 lbs, on the YM186D. Couldn't lift it. I used the backhoe's dipper to lift some of the weight. Then when I raised the bucket off the ground the little tractor cried. I quit before I broke something. The backhoe went back on the YM240 where its near the limit of what that one can lift, even though it was originally sold as an OEM implement for that model.

Interesting. Even different numbers here on Tractor Data. TractorData.com Yanmar YM186 tractor information
