Easy to say as an outsider. "This thing" that was my grandma's might be worth 1000x more to me than it is to you....

Though, overall I agree. Same as letting your $75k truck sit outside (and idle to warm up, etc) so the weight set and other crap that nobody ever uses can be stored.

We recently finished our basement. Threw away a LOT of crap. Tried not to worry about the "but I paid good money for that". Between tossing and organization, much much better (though still not done).

Do you ever think that for some people that might be an easier way to get rid of junk than hauling it to the dump?

They can rent a storage unit and fill it over time and just walk away from it.

Have a friend who is an auctioneer, he told of someone who was picked to move from the US to France to become the VP (or some other high up muckety muck) of the companies French branch with a week's notice, the company paid for movers pack their stuff and put it in storage where it sat for 15 years (with the VP paying rent).
They sold the stuff at auction and ended up with about 3 months rent for everything.

Neighbors married 70 years...

Life pretty good but one sore spot is when mother-in+law passed wife rented a storage...

35 years paying storage and the kicker is several break-ins over the years pilfered the small good stuff.

Our church is being taken advantage of, we have someone’s junk stored in our storage building, they needed a place urgently, others felt sorry for them. It’s been there for years now. Now guy is about to lose his house, behind in payments, etc. We don’t urgently need the space, but.

I keep thinking I should rent a storage unit and put all my wifes stuff in it that has not been used or even looked at for 10 to 15 years.... then forget to pay the rent. Bye, bye stuff.

Honestly, my wife is a saver of smaller sized clothes (that she will never fit and will never be in style again) and also knickknacks and Christmas junk. She's a bargain shopper, so always adding to her stash in the basement. Luckily, she never runs out of space because I periodically gather and dispose of things that are years old and often in new packaging or with tags. I fill a trash bag, drop in the big steel bins that go to veterans and shed never caught on. I never take a big chunk, just a slow and steady churn of her buying and me removing.

Honestly, my wife is a saver of smaller sized clothes (that she will never fit and will never be in style again) and also knickknacks and Christmas junk. She's a bargain shopper, so always adding to her stash in the basement. Luckily, she never runs out of space because I periodically gather and dispose of things that are years old and often in new packaging or with tags. I fill a trash bag, drop in the big steel bins that go to veterans and shed never caught on. I never take a big chunk, just a slow and steady churn of her buying and me removing.

You'd better hope she never catches on or your shop/garage will be empty!! I couldn't sleep at night if I did that!!

Finally I had to cut her off from the check book and credit cards. I even put all catalog companies on notice, the gravy train was over. Then it came time to clean the basement. She threw a fit, said it was all good stuff, which a lot of it was brand new but worthless. I hauled it all up from the basement, set it by her chair so she could sort it into two piles, keep and chuck. I then hauled both piles to the dump. She never knew the difference.

That must be a common traits I’ve went through dozens of estate sales with huge piles of unopened stuff piled up.

Sorry to hear that. No good deed goes unpunished they say. The lesson to be learned by some well-meaning folks is to always set an end date. That applies to a loan of money, a loan of space, a "you can move in with us when until you find a job" and so forth.

I've learned over the years that if you loan someone who is down on their luck $100 and say "pay me back when you can" you do them no favors and you change the relationship from friend to lender/borrower with a very fuzzy verbal contract. Set a condition with a clear date, or give it as a gift. Otherwise it gets awkward and if you see the gift receiver uptown eating an ice cream cone and he has yet to pay you back...you feel a little cheated. Just some thoughts.
