Ditch the wheel. It's not doing anything anyways and it will just get bent beyond repair on any decent sized brush. All these cutters need is the side skates and let it ride on the ground.
Hmmm. Thats a thought

After a closer look at your pictures, it may be a bit tricky to get the side skates with that deck design.

Here she is again. Big round area in the rear. That is typical for the tow behind brush mowers here.

Could you just let the tractor carry the mower? On mine the skids are adjusted off the ground anyway. Just uses the wheel instead of the top link to support the mower.

I think I'll keep the wheel. Extending the mount won't be difficult and it will enhance its usefulness as a mower which is how we will use it.
The wheel bolts onto the mower so it could be removed without any damage.

Skids!! That was the word I was looking for for the last hour. 😅

Over here we just let it ride on the skids. On my proprieties, I go as low as possible with is about 1" from the ground but I already know what's there and what I will hit. The chains do hit the ground every once in a while on uneven ground but not a big deal. When I mow for someone else, I raise the cutting height to about 2", sometimes 3".

Since all the cutters here have chains from the A frame to the rear of the mower, we often just extend the top link to get play in the chains and let the cutter contour the ground.

For an experiment, it's probably not worth the extra time and materials to change to skids. It's a lot easier to just move the wheel back to get more room to pivot.

Both my Landpride slashers (Bat wing and rear mount 84") have replaceable skids on them that I hard rodded prior to first use. Last much longer that way.

The Blades should NOT have been welded on. They are designed to pivot on the bolt that isn't there if they hit something. Personally I would have kept it as found.

WE DID NOT weld the blades on. We FOUND the nuts welded on so we could not remove the blades without cutting the pivot bolts which we found unnecessary for our immediate needs. The Blades still rotate.
I hope this helps
