i have a 1996 JD 6200 w/a GB440 FEL. I'd like to buy a 72" grapple to help me with all the downed limbs and storm debris on my property. Who makes a solid dependable grapple that would fit my old JD?

I have an MTL Extreme I bought some years ago. Lots of farm use with heavy loads. I can say the welds are excellent and I have not damaged it. That version is pretty heavy, but I see no reason your JD would not handle it fine, assuming loader and hydraulics are compatible. I have abused mine...believe me.

Homestead Implements Pinnacle series is a very well made grapple. Mine is very stout!

There are a lot of choices, and most of them are good. I've had good luck with my MTL. They may be heavier than others but I've never found that to be a problem.
If I was shopping now I also would look at a Frostbite.

What attachment style does the OP have? Is it SSQA or something else?

Eleven years ago I had a very HD grapple ( Land Pride SGC1560 - 820 pounds ) and WR Long 3rd function installed on my Kubota M6040. It has served well under some pretty extreme conditions. Nothing bent, broken or bruised. I rattle can repaint the tine tips every so often.

I would suggest any of the brands mentioned above plus - Land Pride and ANBO.

Interestingly, I just ordered a weld on bucket grapple from Green Machine, Inc. I'm gonna weld it on a rail I will weld to the top of one of my lighter duty material buckets (they are all SSQA anyway) as I only need it for moving limbs to the burn pile. 700 bucks shipped to me including everything but hoses and couplers which I already have anyway.

I don't require anything fancy, just a set of rotating pincer jaws to retain the limbs in my bucket and save me from having to cut up everything to fit in the bucket anyway. Of course they entail some fabrication to the top of the bucket (welding), but not a big deal here.

I have 3 buckets actually, 2 double floor HD excavation buckets, one of which I keep my bale spear on all the time and the other I use for any dirt work and the light duty material bucket the pincer jaws will go on. I don't have a 3rd function either. I just ran hydraulic lines to the loader arms out front with a pair of Pioneer SCV's with males on the back of the tractor (the cab tractor) that I plug into the top set of couplers on the back of the tractor. I have 3 sets of remotes on the back of both tractors and the top set also has flow control so I just use the in cab lever to control the hydraulic flow to the loader mounted couplers. Nothing fancy, no extra controls. I like it simple but effective.

I cannot see spending over a grand for something I won't use all that much anyway and in the open position they can stay attached to the bucket all the time anyway. Besides, I'm cheap...lol

Both my M9's came with nice grill guards from the factory not that I've ever required them as I'm careful about junk (limbs and such) poking the grill and or radiator.
