3 point logging winch

I bought a new cable from Northeast Implements in Spenser, NY. I had to call as they don't have a catalog on line but they are a Farmi parts supplier. They shipped it to me via UPS. Steel 3/8" wire rope weighs about 1/4 lb per foot depending on the particular stranding. Labonville in Goram, NH will also ship it to you.

It came on a nice wooden drum

Install the new wire rope under significant tension.

A long while ago I bought a used winch from a guy who worked for the power company. He used the wire rope they used for guy wires. Terrible stuff - way to stiff. You want 6 strands made up of fine wire with the 6 strands wrapped on a core also made up of fine wire.gg
That "wire rope" that he used for the winch which is a 7 wire strand, is probably "guy wire" which is used to anchor poles, and is also used to suspend the conductor wires between poles. I would like to have a penny for every mile of that stuff I made or did QC work on! Depending on the size of each wire, those cables can stand a lot of tensile strength, but bending like wire rope isn't in its design features.
We also manufactured 1.25" wire rope, but the breaking strength of it was over the comfortable capacity of our Tinius Olsen Testing machine, and would shake the machine violently when the cable failed during testing. (somewhere above 85,000 lbs breaking strength) I spent 15 years in that wire and cable plant.

David - Where was that plant you worked in?

I spent a couple of decades working for a steel wire manufacturing plant in various capacities. We made tempered spring wire. I still have a part-time connection there.

Florida Wire and Cable, Jacksonville, Florida. There were 3 wire companies side by side on North Lane Ave and none were competitors. We all made different types of wire.
