The best conterweight is a loader! MAny winches are built very much the same, be sure clutch rebuilding is easy!

These Winches make a pretty good counterweight for a loader too. I have used my winch blade to dig out stumps roots too but not easy on the tractor!

I had a 30 hp kubota and bought a Fransgard V-3507. I now use it on a 40 hp Mahindra. I love it. DSCN8279.JPG

Boy, that is a beautiful scene, but reminds me of what's to come... wet boots, cold nose, frozen fuel lines, and jumper cables  ....But on the plus side, I'm looking forward to no bugs

You said it. I've noticed that Gordon has a knack for taking picturesque photos that look like they belong on a woodsman's calender. Really makes me want a winch, too!

I see this is an older thread, however thought I'd ask as I've been enquiring. I see Grandad4 mentioned Hudson sold both farmi and uniforest. Was just wondering the prices back then, and what the difference were. Also, Labonville, in Newhampshire seemed to have cheaper prices for the Norse.

For me, a winch is a must as I just don't want to have to build roads into every place I'm skidding, and getting a bit bigger winch allows me to skid multiples of smaller tree's,

This is actually steeper than it looks, but I can set the tractor in one location and pull several logs out,

and them skid them two at a time,

to a landing,

Then I can "load em up, an move-em out"! lol

Over the years, I've looked at a LOT of winches, and the only two brands that have impressed me so far, are Wallenstein and Farmi. I bought the Wallenstein...

My Farmi has been good to me. It's hard to compare the major brands without the opportunity to test each one. Basically, you'll shop by specifications and price. I was wanting the Wallenstein for the built in receiver hitch however it required more horsepower at the pto than my L2501 has, so I ended up with the Farmi 351 from Northeast implement. Couldn't be happier. I'll weld a receiver hitch on it one of these days.

Some Norse/Igland has a hinged blade witch is a big plus in difficult terrain and on smaller tractors.

That hinged blade does look nice. They show in one of their videos where the blade would have bottomed out on a stump, but instead hinges up and even cups the logs so they don't get stuck. Norse winches also seem to be priced much lower than the competition.

I'm no logger but my thought on the subject would be not letting them dig in the ground, seems like that would waste a lot of fuel, I kinda pictured getting the front off the ground a little? What about a logger duty boom poll, the reason I ask was because I thought about pulling tops out of woods and feel I would buy a boom poll to lift up a little rather than drag dirt with the logs.
