3 pt hitch logging winch, is any one better than another?

On mine the spool has three bearings on a loose fit so they can move easily on the shaft. And there are a return spring to keep them apart.

Blooper, how much or when did you buy your winch from labonville?

Just saw this question... I bought the Norse 450 used in NB, Canada this summer ... it is 7 years old, perfect condition and I paid $2000. The 450 is rated at about 10,000 lbs... and works great. Wish I had of bought one sooner.

Here's a quick vid of it in use.... pulling out 1/2 dozen 20 to 30 foot hardwood logs the other day.

VroomVroom, I just checked my manual and that was at a local used equipment dealer here in eastern Ontario.
The winch was new though for 2650$ in the spring of 2011....the other price I mentioned earlier was for the chipper, that I bought the same year. I still believe he gave me a good deal on the winch.

IF "that's" the kind of "noise" those new Massey's make, that alone would keep me from buying one! lol

Would something like this be worth buying for occasional use?

Norwood Log Hog Log Skidder Tractor Attachment, Model# 41255 Log Hog | Log Skidding Accessories| Northern Tool + Equipment

I like the idea of this more than a boom pole, I feel this would be safer

I have rarely seen anyone pulling logs with a boom pole. When I did, it was just for a "one-off" job, and it was because the boom pole was what they had handy. A boom pole is designed to lift things that are out away from the tractor. For log skidding, you are better off with something that keeps the logs in close to the 3 PT hitch arms (more lift capacity, probably a bit more stable configuration)

The attachment you linked works for dragging logs once you get them to the tractor. What the winch adds is the ability to get the logs up to the tractor easily. If getting them to the tractor is not going to be an issue for you, then the item you linked will work just fine.

Before I had the winch, I did something similar by just chaining logs to my box blade. I couldn't lift as much as I could with one of those skidding attachments, since the box blade weighs more, and sits further back from the tractor, but it worked for occasional use. I had thought about adding some chain grab hooks or slotted plates to hook the chains in to, but never got around to it.

Some of them were REALLY nice, those were the ones a friend paid me to skid out for him! SO, they didn't come to my house! lol
