Hey Muxster. The JD dealer I was talking to told me the changes were a 40 amp alternator, 790 was 20 AMP, California emmision compliant engine, and front axle upgrade. I work with several guys who have 790"s and none stated any problems with the mentioned upgrades.

Does the John Deere 3005 have a vertical exhaust or horzontial exhaust system.

Hey, good catch ct12. From elalexander's earlier post with pics, it does look like an exhaust under the body. I guess Roy isn't going to be upgrading!

Someone mention about a 25% increase in hydraulic pressure; Is that true?
I wonder if it's a retro upgrade? I could use it!

When I was at the JD dealer a few weeks ago they had no new information or literature on the 3005. It may be on the JD website. I kind of like what they did with the exhaust. My tractor has a vertical stack and when I have to go around trees it can be a pain. A stack and a nonfolding ROPS would be a real pain for sure. Unless you like to catch small limbs and have them let loose and smack you upside the head.

Nope, I'm not...
I am glad to see Deere came to their senses and kept this design around though.

As far as the exhaust and ROPS vs. low hanging branches...I just lop off any branches that are in the way. That's as I mow the lawn or field early in the season.

Same with me Roy, I kind of like my 790 and at ~400 hours it's barely broken in. Of course, I don't have many trees to snag things on. Might be different if I had a different property.

So does the 3005 have a HST? If it does then I think that Deere will be able to compete much better with the L2800/L3400 from Kubota. The 790 dropped off my shopping list once I found out that it didn't have a hydro. I'm sure that's been the case for others.

Just in case anyone needs further confirmation, I checked today and there is no exhaust stack on the 3005.

No, the 3005 does not have HST...we leave HST to uncoordinated folks who can't handle a manly tractor.

Not only am I 'unmanly' and uncoordinated, but the lean-to on my barn is to low to fit the rigid ROPS beneath. Too bad, cause the 790/3005 has everything going for it: great price, looks, build quality, power, simplicity...

If you don't have clearance issues and can pick up 200lbs with ease, the 790/3005 is for you!

(Kidding, Roy - you know that!)

It looks to me like the picture of the 790 in Rob`s avatar is bigger than the 3005? Am I wrong?

It would be my guess that the 790`s have been larger in past? And that the later models of the 790 including the 3005 are growing smaller in size??

All the 790's have been the same size (since 1998 or 1999). There has been 3 different engines used (4, with the 3005), 3 different loaders (#70, 419 and 300x).
The 790's predecessors, the 670 and 770, shared much of the drive train and sheet metal but had less engine/PTO horsepower as well as smaller tires.

The 3005 looks pretty good...but since I'm quite satisfied with my 790 (which will soon be paid off), there's no advantage to buying a newer machine.

Thankyou I just thought that some of the adds with 790 looked bigger than the 3005, perhaps just tires and/or optical illusion.

Two things there... Low camera angle makes anything look bigger plus I have the ROPS extensions to give me head clearance on the backhoe. A minor thing but it does really change the scale of the 790 for some reason.

That`s great because your 790 with the loader looks AWESOME...I was worried my 3005 would look smaller.:) .................................................

btw....A Mahindra dealer told me that John Deere 3005 has alluminum block???

I'd say that's unlikely...

Thanks FF, I'm rather fond of it. I guess one other change since mine is the loaders. I have the 70 loader which has shorter masts/uprights than the newer models. I suppose that contributes to the tractor looking larger as well.

And I doubt the aluminum block thing. It makes no sense as aluminum is more expensive than iron and weight is not an issue on a tractor. I could put a magnet to mine if anyone is interested.
