I have the 4310 with ehydro which is basicly the older 3320. I too had a 790. I will not shift again. And as Jenkinsph said I too grew up on gears. That said I would go with more HP. Mine bogs with an mx5 in heavy stuff. Also can't go as fast as I'd like sometimes with the 6ft. finish mower. Don't get me wrong I love this machine, just if I was starting fresh I wouldn't hesitate on a little more onion(HP).

4310 huh? Does it happen to have an aluminum transaxle housing? I'd like to find a used 10 series but can't find anything descent for much less than the 20 series.

I grew up on geared tractors beginning with an old 8N and still have some. I also have HST's as well as a M8540 with Hydraulic Shuttle Shift. The Hydraulic Shuttle Shift is a vast improvement over my old synchro shuttle shift which was an improvement over non shuttle shift, but synchro transmissions which were an improvement over the non synchro transmissions.

I have to admit that having used them all or many different ones anyway that I prefer the HST. I think it is much easier for the novice or less experienced user to operate one efficiently; my wife whose only tractor experience has been on SCUTS, JD2305 and a couple of BX models, can bush hog with my L5030 while I do so with my M8540, she won't go near the 8540 or our old CX80.

With many owners using their tractors for relatively small numbers of hours, my used L5030 was seven years old when I bought it with 700 hours, it is going to be hard for many to get really comfortable with geared units no matter how good they are. Now that is different for high use people as our renters and friends can do stuff with their 8000 Series John Deeres I wouldn't try with my L5030.

My only advice is get what you want or you will buy twice and try them all out. Keep in mind, like a recliner, a short try out can be misleading as what you "think" you can get use to or will grow on you most often won't.

Not knocking anyone's preference; just what works best for me.

For a few dollars more.....you SHOULD buy the CX loader over the former. Much better capacities.

I absolutely agree - even if you dont feel you need the additional capacities of the the CX loader - get it. You will be much happier in the long run.

Havn't paid it any mind. Just run the piss out of it!! Just turned 500 hours and no problems other than the usual you can research on here. You know like the brake light, foggy dash and fuel gauge kinda stuff.

I can't comment on the hydro, but I sure do like my PR compared to the crash box that was in the 790. I tried a hydro, but didn't really think it had the tourque output (seat of pants that is) as the PR; of course when I was looking I had no idea that in order to get more torque from the hydro you actually had to let off of the pedal a bit (less flow more pressure?) to get the same feeling of torque transfer. I'm with Roy on this one though; I like gears, the drive bone is connected to the drive bone!

Well here are my comments, and I know they are not worth a lot when you are all talking abut power reverser vs e-hydro. because I own a Kubota with HST, but here they are anyway. With my HST, I feel like the tractor is part of me. when doing loader work in tight spaces, which is about all I have to work in, after a while all movement of the tractor is totally automatic without thought. When digging out a boulder in the woods. the control with HST is just amazing. The working of the HST and the loader controls work so well as a team. I never had that feeling with my B7500 with the gear transmission. It shifted very easily, and I got very good at doing that. But there is something lost there. As far as mowing. I am sure a gear transmission is as good or better than a Hydro. However I did have a hydro NH that I mowed 7 acres about every 2 weeks, and it worked flawlessly, Of course I used Cruise almost constantly, except when I was backing up a thousand time to clean out under the low hanging cedar trees. My first tractor was a Long 2360 with a very hard to shift crash-box that I mowed those 7 acres with before the New Holland. It was not a whole lot of fun, but I used it for several years. I have driven gear cars and trucks for most of my 55 years except until recently. I will never ever go back to a gear tractor again, because I just love hydro so much, In fact after I have used the tractor all weekend, and I get in the car with automatic transmission. and start to back up I have actually wondered why the stupid thing wont go in reverse with just my rocking my foot backwards!! it takes me a second to remember I actually have to "shift" it! Again take my comments for what you paid for them, but they are my thoughts, and I am sticking with em.. best regards, and good luck with whatever you choose.

Your comment on the drive bone connected to the drive bone. makes me think about screw type jacks compared to hydraulic jacks. The hydraulic jack uses fluid to transfer the forces while the screw jack doesn't and I find the hydraulic jack is easier to use.
