Rob,
Interesting that you would post about the fire hazard and your plans to keep it irrigated and green. I saw your pics or walking from the lower part of your property up tot he house and noticed the dried grass. I was jsut then thinking how you would benefit from doing controlled burns. That is what we do here, and it is very scary but we have to in order to reduce the fire risk.
As every else has said, great home and thank you so much for letting us share your dream.

WOW! what a difference with the stain, it really looks fantastic. One quick question. I understand structurally why they have the bottle jacks on top of the logs holding up the upstairs framining and floor. What will the builder do to hide those in the finishing work?

Yes, I did get the card and put a thankyou out to everyone who sent cards in the daisy chain thread. I was surprised with your guys card as I don't recall anyone of you guys posting in the thread so it was a nice surprise when it came in as was Eddies and his Ocktoberfest get togethers card. TBN is a great community and I am glad to still be a part of it. If you or anyone else ever needs any help don't be afraid to ask. If I can't help personally I might know someone who can.

I wish we could do controlled burns like you do, but in our case, it could get out of hand in a heartbeat. I would be scared to death to try a controlled burn for that reason. Plus, I don't think I could get a burn permit for that reason either. Not only that, the county only issues burn permits after Dec 3rd, and ONLY if there is no fire hazard at all.

I was up there last weekend and it had poured the week before. It was raining when I arrived at the fire station and asked for a burn permit. They were still NOT issuing them! Shees! So I will have to check back with them next visit. They also only issue them for burning vegetation cleared specifically when you are building a new home. So technically, if you were burning something else, they could fine you, although it would be hard to distinguish in my case.

Yes, I like the stain too.
It really gives the logs a rich, warm Earthy look instead of that cold pale look.
The steel jacks will be hidden when the interior walls are rocked. So they will be out of sight. They use them now to level the building during construction, when they were laying the logs. I asked them about when the house settles if they ever have to re-adjust them? They said more than likely not.

I just got back from a few days in the Smokey Mountains, although they still don't seem to compare to your back yard. Anyway, catching up on your stuff. Great vids of the back hoe Vs. trench, and great shots of the house. It's almost there man. As I was looking at the shots of the house (castle) above the rock perch I was thinking about you having to dig a moat all the way around that thing (the castle theme) through that DG!! Wow. I don't think our rocks are as hard as your soil. I think I would have opted for TNT, not the top n tilt stuff, the real TNT. KaBoom!

I'm also interested to see your barn take shape. That's a mighty fine looking barn. Not sure it qualifies as a barn though, waaaaaay too nice.

I got back this weekend after visiting the property with 2 of my sons and a good friend. Loretta did not accompany us though. I'll show some progress, although minor, and also several views from afar. For nearly 4 years we've been driving up and seeing only the natural hillside views. Now it has completely changed for us and our neighbors as we enter the property and get closer to it.

This first picture is from the paved road leading up to our dirt road. You can see the log home on the right and also part of the barn. The second photo is coming up our dirt road, from about the middle of our property and a close up from there. The last one is from the homesite circle drive as we drive up to it.

You can see they did a little more staining on the home. It looks pretty good now on the exterior walls. I also like these pictures showing the roof line and the over hang covering the porches and decks. You can see on the second to last photo they have started to paint the facia on some of the eaves Hunter Green. I think that one is over the bay window where our living room juts out.
