So I have been wondering if anyone has taken 2 5 foot brush hogs to make a 10 foot brush hog?
I know anything can be done but should it?
what would be involved?
a good used 10 foot goes for about 4000 while used 5 foots go for about 500
Just thinking about it I would have to be able to turn the gear boxes and find a way to join the 2 pto shafts to a center one

I'm sure it can be done...not sure if the result would be worth the work involved.
However, take a look at how manufacturers build gang mowers for ideas of how to accomplish the task...

Here's one for a start:
TBW144 Finish Mowers
Note that you can download the product manual. That may give you some ideas.

I've seen a RoW company take two Brown TCO 2615 Tree Cutters and make one 11' cutter out of them. They just cut the side bands off one side on each, turned the gearboxes in towards each other, put a devider in the middle and moved a 3pt frame to the center with a piece of 4" square tubing going across the front to support the frame being in the middle. It looked pretty simple but I bet it took 80 hours of cutting and welding to do it and make it look proper and not a hack job, which they did.

have you checked on kodiak and howse. both have a 10' fixed mower.. I looked at each.. mind you it's been a few years.. but both were 2400-2800$ NEW . can't imagine they have made it to 4000$ .. hope not anyway.

also check craigslist.. i see 10'er all the time for low $$

lastly.. to answet the question.. if making a fixed deck, you have to cut the side out of each and join so that the blades don't hit or synch them 90.

a 1 input 2 output gearbox head would be needed to drive them.. either turnign the boxes ont he frame to point at each other and drive as a T setup.. or like a batwing does with a V setup and the boxes fed from forward.. being careful to match direction and ratio. perhaps a beater 15' batwing might make a suitable parts platform to get a 10' out of, and loos ethe center section and disconnect drive.. have spare gearbox and all.

used beater 15' mower in my area go for 1500-2500$

Sychronize gearboxes to overlap the blades, add a splitter gear box, add 2 more PTO shafts, fabricate new hitch frame and reinfoceme everything - too much effort for me - could cut a lot of grass with a 5' deck in the time it takes to do all that.
