5740 dif lock lever

When I need dif lock for the rear, I step on the lever but it takes so much force to get it to lock in that I stall the tractor with me getting little weight on the seat. I looked underneath and could not see any adjustment. Is everyones lever hard to push? Can this be adjusted?

Mine is very hard too, just like my L3710 was. Only difference was no seat switch on the L3710 so I didn't kill the engine like I do on my L5740.

Thats why i installed a seat saftey switch bypass toggle switch. Basically a jumper between the seat wires. Got so sick of it shutting down on me hooking up an implement or moving around to see the pallet forks. Switch on for seat annoying tasks, switch off for everyday use. Works well and doesnt permenently disable a nice saftey feature.

About my least favorite aspect of the Grand L. On mine it's this little stubby, spring-loaded nub that you step on. If your boots are wet or muddy, your foot invariably slips off the darn thing at just the wrong moment.

I think it's pretty much the same on all the Kubota tractors. I had the same problem on my JD zero turn mower. On hillsides it would kill the engine when I slid too far on the seat and eventually it did it all the time. I rigged a jumper to disable the seat switch. I will probably do the same on the Kubota. It may save injury/life sometime, but our big brother/nanny government sure has increased the cost and aggravation factors on equipment by saving us from ourselves.

The diff lock lever is definitely too short and isn't that easy to find when you
need it. The seat switch had to be disconnected on our L3940 because it would
not go with my wife in the seat no matter what adjustments were tried the
engine would die everytime she touched the hydro pedal. I won't say who
disconnected but it was done. I'm not one for overriding or bypassing safety
items of any kind but in this case we had no choice, she's the main operator.

I know some are anti electronic anything but I would like to see the lever replaced with a momentary push button switch.

There is nothing worse than being in a tight spot, and needing to step on that little lever.
I step on it, and get moving, then the engine dies.

I complained to the dealer about it and they thought it was the seat. They replaced the seat for me, and it is the same issue.

The only solution I know of is to install a bypass switch, but that isn't the best idea either, as it isn't the safest thing.
Kubota makes some great equipment, but the they miss the finishing touches.

On my L5030, I don't seem to have any issues finding or depressing the diff lock. However, I am a pretty fair sized guy, and I have my seat pushed back as far as it will go, which I think helps align the back of my boot with the lever.

I tend to use my diff lock quite a bit, as I don't run in 4x4 unless I really need it, but mine don't feel stiff or hard to engage.

Installing a seat safety switch bypass sounds like a good idea, but for different reasons. On occasion, I need to raise up in my seat to shift cheeks so to speak, doing so cuts the tractor off. Very annoying for sure. Having a switch I could momentarily switch off would be great. I think this gets added to my list of things to do.

I wonder if I could cut off where the rod comes out and makes a 90 degree turn, then get the same size rod and extend it out a few more inches as well as angle it up. It seems as though mine bottoms out.

I don't have an issue with it but one could install a small actuator on it to resolve the problem.

I may be onto a simple inexpensive solution here for us. I removed the diff lock pedal return spring from my L3940 last night, see 1st photo. I then wrote down the specs to the best of my ability, including spring force rate using my fish scale, see 2nd photo. I then ordered a spring of similar size but with half the spring force rate last night from McMaster Carr, see 3rd photo. When the spring from MMC comes in, I will have a baseline to check my orginal spring rate measurment, and make corrections as needed. If the rate of new spring is half the rate of old spring, I will install and report. If changes are needed, I will buy a few more springs and report. Philip.

I like that idea. An electronic diff lock switch on the dash would be cool. Kinda like my Jeep e-locker. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm:thumbsup:

Diff lock levers and switches have been an issue on many tractors for many years. I've seen the electronics that used a switch that was just a push button as well as differetn lever configurations.

I've also seen the damage done from people putting a chain on the floor that was able engage the diff lock and the operator actually telling us he couldn't figure out why he needed the brakes to assist with turning! Sure did do plenty of damage as it finally took out the housing that contained the diff lock assembly when it couldn't take any more.

On the other side we have spent hours getting the mechanical levers free so they would work again!

When making mods to a tractor try and not alter them to much so they might unintentionally engage to easily for someone not used to the equipment.
