I've had a series of 3 Ford F150 long box pickups and never thought I would be without a pickup, but when I wanted to buy a 3/4 ton truck and my wife wanted a van, we compromised and purchased a Yukon XL. I can actually transport twelve foot long materials and still close the rear doors (within reason) and since I only carry materials once or twice a month, we have the passenger transport capability of three seats so we disposed of one car and my last pickup. The savings on plates and insurance in one year for those two vehicles paid for a 14 foot long utility trailer for the messy loads and hauling our ATV's.
What I miss about a pickup if the ability to stop and pickup (pun intended) items you have to pre-plan for with a SUV with or without trailer. My Yukon requires removing the third seat for any medium loads and putting pads down to keep the interior from being ripped or stained (leather seats) and it can be a pain to hookup and store the trailer, but overall I do prefer the combination I have now.

I'm leaning toward selling the truck and using the van/trailer combo when needed. I'll either have to build sides for the trailer or pay to have my wood mulch for the flower beds delivered each year.

Alan, I only have my Dodge 3/4 ton and drive it 150+ miles each day round trip to work. I get a little better mileage than you, but fuel is a major expense. However, every time I think of buying an additional commuter car, I just start considering the hassle of taking care of that extra vehicle, insurance, and expenses. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif I think I'll just keep driving my truck. I always wanted a vehicle with over 300k miles anyhow. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It just a truck. I got rid of my Dodge Dakota and couldn't be happier with the decision! I'm still waiting to find the perfect trailer to replace it though.
I do still own a Suzuki Samurai with no carpet in it or back seat for hauling junk around, but most wouldn't call it a "mans" vehicle /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
But anyways can feel like a man sitting on a tractor, or even a pink bicycle if I needed to! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

For a number of years we did have a little Toyota 4x4 pickup...which I liked...but with a full size van the only time I miss the pick up is when I want to get a load of sand, or something like that, or when I want to transport something like a refrigerator, that should be kept standing up, rather than on its side.
It is possible to haul some messy things inside without too much worry, if you lay down a sheet of plastic first (and take out the seats if it has them, which in my case is a relativly easy chore).
All-in-all for my normal needs I like the van more than a pickup. We can camp in it, haul most things in the rain in it and keep them dry...and so on.
I like pickups, but it is not practical for me to have both, so I keep with a van now and only once in a while think "man, if only that roof wasn't there..."

Full coverage for my 03 Crewcab 4wd diesel is another story. Insurance on it is $960/year. My wife's 03 Expedition is $1120/year. So just those two are about $173/month. It's the liability only where you save. My 00 Grand Prix is also liability only and it's $212/year and $712 full coverage. Quite a savings when you don't add in the collision.

As I've mentioned in the past, I have a job that makes me miserable (even though I've VERY thankful for the income it provides), and I like to spend the time away from there with as many friends as possible. Spending time with friends and family tends to uplift your spirits when you're feeling down, and after having get-togethers at other's homes, I thought it would be nice to do the same at our home. (Maybe a TBN party someday in the future?) Which brings us to the deck!

Financing the deck is not an option. Except for the basics (house payment, car payments at 3.75%, tractor payment at 0%), we have no debt. We don't use credit cards for anything, and if we do, they are immediately paid in full. Home improvement projects are completed as we are able to save the money for them. I figured if I'm not going to use it, I might as well sell the truck, and build something that will give me satisfaction constructing it and give my wife and I and our friends and family years of use. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

AndyM . . . I really liked Henro's response and thought it made sense in your situation. I remember reading some other posts you made about how you'd like to change your employment situation and your total disatisfaction with your current job (and I think your wife was in the same boat on that as you are if I recall correctly).
Many of us (men) place our ego above practical answers. Me, I choose to live on a strict budget and save for my future and the future of my child and potential grandchildren. I have an income level that would let me live to far higher standards, yet I find that having minimal personal debt, buying only what I can afford to pay for, and enjoying my life away from work is a better life for me. I know that if I was you, I would be selling the truck because it is the practical answer. You have other means to haul things (the trailer) and the truck is a depreciating asset that could be put to better use while it still retains the current value. I am debating a similar thing right now and am contemplating selling my Avanti convertible, one of the few convertibles ever built (only made a couple hundred out of 9000+ total Avanti cars). Because it is not growing in value and I have better things to spend money on than to maintain a car that I only drive on sunny summer days.
Personally, I think you are among the very few American's out in the real world that treat money in a very responsible manner. Most have credit card and other debts up the wazoo, finance cars after making no down payments and pay rates that are too high because they are credit risks due to over indulgent life styles. I've read a lot of your posts and your attitude toward a responsible fiscal lifestyle rings through many of them. I have to applaud you for the way you balance your needs with your wants and the realities of your situation.

Praises for your finiancial responsibility. I would like to see everyone follow your guidelines, of course the credit built economy would crumble into a depression, but what would climb back out would be far more sound.

Here's a breakdown of our new car purchases...
1989 Chevy Cavalier Z24...

As for your pickup truck question... we now have a 2000 Impala, a full size van and a 18' car hauler trailer. The pickup has been put out to pasture and has not been missed. The trailer/van combo hauls way more than the truck could and only costs about $50.00 a year for plates and less than $100.00 for insurance.
As my wife would say, "As long as we have a car that is nice enough to drive to funerals and weddings, I'm happy."

Funny, but I see lots of hot young girls/women driving pickups in my area. Seems to me, the smaller sized pick-ups have become ladies trucks.

I dont have a big truck but a small toyota. I drive it about 5000 iles a year to relieve miles form the good car (honda w/ 110,000 miles)
It has a 6ft bed so it gets the job done .. Barely, We can hau/towl 3500 lbs without a problem.Decent gas mileage at 25mpg too!
I would sell it if you dont have any land or use for it. Keep it if you can really use it besides from deliveries.

Personally, I think you are among the very few American's out in the real world that treat money in a very responsible manner. Most have credit card and other debts up the wazoo, finance cars after making no down payments and pay rates that are too high because they are credit risks due to over indulgent life styles. I've read a lot of your posts and your attitude toward a responsible fiscal lifestyle rings through many of them. I have to applaud you for the way you balance your needs with your wants and the realities of your situation. )</font>

Glad to see I'm not the only one with two trucks in the driveway. When I bought my F150 4x4 Crew they offered me a measly $2K for my 98 Ranger with 42K miles on it. Heck, I'll keep it as a "spare" for that price. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
