Got to drinking early yesterday so I figured I could rebuild this old jalopy that has served us well over the years.

It's in tough shape, really tough after the grim reaper plasma hacker appeared. Might be quicker to start fresh.

I'd start over. Surely there are some changes you'd make to the original... now's the time. Not to mention whenever I've tried to re-use something I've wished I'd started from scratch.

Old steel can be a better grade than what is common today.... but you probably know that already.....

All we use it for is firewood. Have a new Taylor Pittsburgh dumper for dirt and heavy work; It's just a bit much for my tractor to handle, even the L3940 has a hard time with it and in the snow forget it.

I would like a dump, my buddy who has a welding shop has a free hydraulic cylinder for me. I'll see him tonight as he builds splitters for a living.
I think by the time I grind off all the extra crap I might just start over.

Need inside bed length 6 feet plus to fit 3 rows 24" wood. Dump to run off the remote that I will install on my crawler. I was thinking about using 1/8" steel for the bed. I know the weight will go up from where it is now. Lighter is better for Winter use in the snow and ice.

Lots of info on the net about how not to build a dumper. So much to learn so little time, never enough beer.

I am not familiar with the Taylor Way brand but I did see a small one new listed for $2000 and would wonder if you can buy a used model that is similar without breaking the bank.

That's an excellent price, most those KIng Kutter's are $2800 dollars.
As thinking males you might agree on my logic, hopefully anyway. If I say to my wife honey we need another red dump cart for 2 grand she will shut me down like right now. I can hear her now; "BUT YOU JUST BOUGHT ONE IN JANUARY!" :confused3: Yup she's right on that one. If I milk her for some steel (beer too) money and parts pieces new tires etc. I bet I can get $4 grand out of her and she won't say a word.:cool2:

Fred - In the end that 2 grand dumper you posted is a great deal I KNOW I'll have more than that into this piece of junk.

I wouldn't scrap it, I would like to stumble across something similar as I need a trailer to pull wood with my jeep.

I like that little case. I have a ctl70 rubber tracked skid steer but I need a small dozer for about a month.

Darn near had a heart attack. Saw the caption above the first pic and thought you were fixing to chop up the Case. I'd keep the frame and add a walking beam tandom axle. Then mount dump bed and lift system. Can't beat a walking beam in the woods.

LOL how does the Case crawler do at road speed?

Had an idea about using 1/8" steel sheet for the tub then reinforcing the bottom for the lift cylinder. Also a tailgate that hinges down not up, like a pickup truck.

So I pretty much have the frame stripped, by the time I'm done paying for grinding wheels, torch gas and Hypermax 600 consumables I might have been better off starting from scratch. I have a love hate relationship with Hypertherm right about now, I've never been totally satisfied with the maintenance and performance of this unit. Might be time to trade for a better model. It eats consumables and I don't have a lot of experience using it; could be part of the problem.

The only good parts are the frame and the axle. I think 2 small diameter dump cylinders should work ok, well I hope. I have this hair-brained idea to make this road-towable with lights and suspension. If so I need a way to lift the dump as my trucks don't have hydraulics.

I thought about making a small portable pump and reservoir by using a weed wacker motor and power steering pump from a car.
What say is that wacky or what?

I do have a Stihl KM-130 and a used power steering pump from a Q7 Audi :shocked: .

With what (very) little I know about hydraulics, I'd be tempted to start with something like this:

6.5 HP 196cc 2-Stage Hydraulic Power Unit | Princess Auto

(If link doesn't show up.... that's basically an integrated hydraulic power pack, w. 6.5hp gas motor @ $469 Canadian).

Couldn't find anything equivalent listed at Harbor Freight..... but knowing the typ. Canada/USA price splits, I'd be surprised if you'd spend much more than $300 to buy that new down your way.....

I've seen some amazing things built and working well, based on What was Lying Around...... so don't take this post as Don't Do It...... just my :2cents:

The power steering pump actually sounds pretty ingenious I've got an old cultivator tractor that runs the lift off a power steering pump and lots of guys have a hydraulic winch on the front of there truck that's plumbed to the power steering

How much pressure does a power steering pump generate? Have you thought about using an old push mower engine? I see people selling refurbished ones all the time for $10 to $20. You might need to by a pump and a lovejoy connector though.

One of these days I want to convert a 20' 12K flat bed trailer into a dual use trailer. I was going to make the deck removable so it could be swapped with a dump box. While not free I figured I would use a 2 stage wood splitter pump connected to a 5hp lawnmower engine. The pump, tank, and box would be removed as one unit. A wood splitter pump would allow it to dump at a good speed for lighter loads, say firewood while kicking down to dump the occasional load of gravel.

I would calculate the pressure and flow desired for the cylinders you plan on using and then see if the pump can produce what you can live with and then if the engine will have the HP needed for the job. No point in making something that could be great handicapped.

The flow of the car PS pump is low compared to tractor but pressure is similar. 1.9 horsepower might not be enough to turn the pump under pressure, I guess it's worth a shot to try it. I was thinking of keeping the pump and homemade reservoir separate that could be thrown in the back of a pickup truck to use when the tractor is not around, kind of portable power unit if you will. Also would need a valve body with two way valve.

It might not be worth the effort.

For now I need to concentrate on the hoist for the trailer, something cheap and reliable that would lift a run of wood.. Hmmmmmmm
