I use mine as part of my 3 pt drag assembly I put together. This works great in places you can't turn around easily. Just pick it up and back up.

Great idea COA, this could work with any drag type implement and save from having to convert them to a 3 pth,;)

Thanks deepNdirt. They say necessity is the mother of invention. I was restoring some road ditches at my place this summer. I have a 3 pt. disc but had no way to pull a regular drag. There was no place to swing out and turn around with a pull behind disc, without running out into the field and ruining my soybeans. I looked around the pole barn and after a couple of modifications, this worked great. Another added benefit was that when it got plugged up with old corn stalks, I would just drag it down to the end of the ditch and lift the drag and dump it all in one place.

I just picked this up. Almost a one of a kind 3 pt boom/crane. The guy I got it from made and sold about 10 of them about 12 years ago. He didn't bother getting a patent. It goes on the 3 pt but I going to adapt it for my loader frame as well. It has hydraulic control to extend it from about 5' to about 9' when it is fully extended. He nicely put feet on it so it can be stored easy. I can run the hydraulics off my rear remotes. When adapting to the FEL you can get another 9' of height. Haven't tried it yet on the tractor but can hardly wait. I still have to clean it up and repaint it. Together with the hydraulic toplink I just got it should be quite versatile

Lifts like this are pretty common. They aren't really designed for compact tractors though. I built one of these out of 4x6 tubing about 15 years ago to lift motors, and heavy stuff. Granted this was put on a 130hp tractor.

A boom pole came with my tractor. I have yet to use it but figure I would kick myself if I got rid of it and then needed it. The only use where I see it would be better than a FEL is when reach is needed.

My boom pole gets a lot of use. It's great for all sorts of lifting and dragging tasks and makes a nice brush hauler. When I'm clearing brush or limbing a tree I lay a choker chain out and stack the limbs across the chain with about 2 feet of the butt ends hanging over. When I'm done I gather up the chain, cinch it, hook it to the end of the pole, lift, and away we go. For variety I sometimes use a 16' length of 1/2" rope with one end backspliced and an eyesplice in the other end. It's a lot lighter and easier to cinch the pile with than the choker chain if the branches are mostly under 1" diameter.

All who has post have had great idea's and good reason for keeping a boom pole around..........
I talk with a Man today that had another great idea, as he was describing to me what he had done I could envision in my mind what he was telling me and that this would make a good useful tool,
He said he was tired of hand unloading dirt manure ect, from his trailer so he had an idea to take his Boom pole and extend 5 ft to it with a larger pipe to slip over the boom, he said he had to cut back and reweld the reinforcement steel that goes along the top side, and cut the hoop off from over the end of the boom and reweld another from inside the pipe and still have use of the boom, he then put a slite bend 2ft from the end of the 5 ft pipe, he weld a 4 ft x 20" steel plate onto the other end and reinforced it, then drilled 2 holes where the larger pipe slid over the boom pole and could insert pins to hold them together,.Now he had what he called a "Boom rake"
and a way to back over his trailer drop down the Boomrake and drag out all the dirt etc, rather than having to hand shovel it all out,
sounds Doable to me :D I think the drawing best describe what he has built

Your idea just gave me a thought: instead of a rake you could attach an old push lawn mower. Run the control cables back to somewhere in reach of the operator. Keep the wheels on the mower and allow it about 30 degrees of float in the "curl" direction and about 30 degrees float about the axis of the pole extension and you'd have a tiny embankmet mower. Not much use, but fun to chase the muskrats with!

To answer the original post question, I think the main use for the boom pole is to lift things when you need to keep them farther away from the tractor, like lifting a rear blade into a trailer or something. If you can lift it farther out, it keeps it from smashing the front of your tractor.

Agreed:
These are just a few uses I get out of a boom pole attached TO a FEL:

This is similar to my idea of building a ditch /bank
mower
*I could use 1 in such a bad way.

If you build it, they will run (the muskrats that is).
Do it, mon!
