South of Tacoma? You must mean the greater Tacoma area. For us in the south sound the greater Seattle area we are not.

Jerry,
Please excuse my boo-boo. There are more people in and around your area than there are in my State! It's easy for a "hick" like me to group it all in together.

No problem, I was just joking. But actually we in the South Sound do have kind of a thing with people thinking we're connected to Seattle (big brother so to speak). In Tacoma we like to have our own identity. We have lots of things of our own incuding our own port, which by the way has just surpassed Seattle in tonage and is the 6th largest port in the US. I'll bet I just told you more than you wanted to know.

Jerry,

Hmm major port, huge shipments....

You might get to see all of the New Kubota's being delivered to the US from Japan! Now that would be a site to see. I wonder if it will ever become a major tourist attraction? /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

I don't know. If it does, I'll hitch up my Deere to a big cart and run a sight seeing sevice of the Kubota imports. I would Deere-ly love that.

Great, Sign me up!

Like they said in that war movie, "I love the smell of diesel in the morning, it smells like Tractoring!" . Well, that's what I heard anyway... I don't even mind if the diesel fumes come from a GREEN exhaust pipe!

Mohammad,

Attached are some screen save shots of my progam "Net Medic" showing the issue that I and maybe a few others have been seeing. I took screen shots 2-8 in a 5 minute period waiting for one page to load. The order is left to right and then top to bottom. There was some network delay, but mostly site delay. The attachment is a zipped Word 2000 file.

Snap 1 - normal data transfer
Snap 2 - network delay at 99% of total delay
Snap 3 - 98% site delay little data being sent
Snap 4 - 98% site delay
Second row
Snap 5 - Lost connection to TBN server - still on the net connection...
Snap 6 - No response from TBN server
Snap 7 - Site failed connection attempt
Snap 8 - Server responded, transfer of data in progress

Am I reading the data correctly? To my untrained eye, it looks like there is a connection issue with the TBN server as the program seems to think that the network connection is good. I don't know if this is useful information or not. By the way, I only had the one glitchy spot tonight.

John,

I can't really make a whole lot of sense of the Net Medic reports, since I don't really know exactly how the program works... next time you experience a slow-down, run a trace route and we'll be able to determine exactly what is causing the slow down... that will show many more details and be much more helpful...

Obviously, pages shouldn't take 5 minutes to load...

I'm in Tacoma Washington, sometimes it's slower than others (56K with about 50-52K connections) tonight it is CRAWLING, keep hitting my "check email" button just to make sure I'm even connected!

John Bud,

I also have a hard time drawing useful conclusions from the Net Medic data. The manufacturer of Net Medic has withdrawn that product from the market, and it has not been sold since March of 2000. It is known not to work with Windows 2000 and anything over IE 5.0. Net Medic does not always produce actual results, but uses various indices and averages to come up with its numbers.

As Muhammad said, by far the most useful tool to start with is to run a trace route. There are so many programs available to do this, it should not be a problem to get hold of one.

Also, it would be helpful to know some details about your setup, like:

Computer brand & processor speed
RAM Memory installed
Operating System and version
Browser and version
The name of your ISP and your account connect speed

Also, sometimes the modem configuration can cause problems of this type. If your modem is more than one or two years old, it is likely the manufacturer has issued updates for the CMOS. Sometimes this can be flash upgraded, and sometimes the modem needs to be replaced.

Anyway, the best first place to look is at a trace route.

Another case of a mystery problem... since my speed is as fast as always tonight and has been for weeks, a problem on the server side is hard to imagine... it all has to do with other connections/lines/routing. I'll have someone look into it tomorrow and see if anything can be discovered... but even on completely different ISPs with different routing, the problem is not there for us...

I tried clearing out the temporary internet files but didn't notice much/any difference in the time it takes to display a thread. What I have noticed is that threads with a lot of fancy signature blocks take longer to load than the ones with none or a few. It seems to be worse when the signature blocks are "off-site"...

Any substance to this observation?

Possibly... or, probably... when I get the chance I'll look into those in more detail, for sure.

Bob,
It's great knowing that there are both tractor and internet/computer experts to rely on here at TBN.

I did know that net medic was no longer supported, but I didn't know that the results are not "real" all the
time. You asked some detailed questions, so I have some detailed answers;

Computer is a 2 year old homebuilt celeron 450 with ASUS zm6 motherboard, 128 meg of PC 100 RAM, 6 gig
HD, 1 year old zoom 56k win modem - 3 week old update.
OS is Win98 first edition
browser Netscape 4.75
I tried 6.0 when I initially had the "stalls", with no change in performance, just other bugs.
ISP is CVOL.net a local provider here in Wisconsin

I am downloading a traceroute program in a secondary window currently and I will hop on it during the next
stall.

Once again, when I get a "TBN stall", I can go to a different site and get zippty quick response. I can then go
back to TBN and it is stalled. I can go to "www.tractorbynet.com" rather than just "back" and it is still stalled.
I can hop to netscape.com which loads a ton of graphics, and it's zippty quick. I'm not saying my setup or
computer is perfect (far from it), those are just the symptoms that I am experiencing.

Oh, one other thing that I notice during a stall, the header for "Tractorbynet.com" listing "home" to "links" will
often load, but the remainder of the screen is blank during the stalled minute or so.

Thanks again for the input and support!

John,

Yes, please do post trace route results next time the problem occurs...

I'm going to guess that the problem is not really with your setup since you can view without problems most of the time... but rather a problem with the routing from CVOL.net to TractorByNet.com. It makes sense that you can load other sites while TractorByNet.com is stalling, since you are taking a different route to each different site. Once you have a trace route you will probably be able to get some advice from your ISP in regards to what you can do to fix the problem...

Hi Bud,

There does not appear to me to be anything in your configuration to cause your problem. Your Netscape browser is a bit "old" but other than that, you've got plenty of horsepower.

I ran a trace myself to your ISP in WI several times tonight, and do not see any slowdowns. Yours to TBN would be different of course; I just wanted to see in general terms how the route went. Seems okay too.

Lets hope that your trace route will provide some better clues for us.

I was also unable to get to TNB last night after work - 5:30 pm. It would load 1% at a time and stalled at 33% after about 5 minutes. Tried connecting on and off for a half hour and gave up. Didn't have a problem connecting this morning at 5:30 am though.

That's consistent with what I have noticed at home (Modem/AOL). At work (T? line) it just hangs from the moment I click something occasionally (shows VERY slow progress on the little bar at the bottom of the screen (Internet Explorer).

John, Michele or Paul, and Rob, I get about the same problem you're having. Sometimes it's just tractorbynet and sometimes it's all sites, so I've just assumed it's my old tired country phone lines or an ISP that's overloaded. Last night was really slow, and it's not a matter of being slow; it's a matter of transmissions pausing, sometimes for so long that I disconnect and dial in again. And sometimes I disconnect and wait until the next morning. Everything seems to work pretty well early in the morning.

I haven't contributed to this discussion 'cuz everything has been fine from here, but maybe that very fact is worth mentioning. TBN response has been nothing short of excellent for many weeks now, and I'm on it from about 6:30 a.m. 'til midnight (PST) or later (occasionally taking time off to work /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif).

I guess I'm just supporting the notion that any slowups must have nothing to do with the TBN server. That still leaves plenty of variables, like routing problems, line quality, or maybe how many snowdrifts are between you and TBN /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif.

Of course, being in Californy, my network performance may get considerably worse when they take the power away. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif
