AR 15

If I were to go AR again, I would play with some of the other calibers. Long gone is the day of just a 556 AR. There are dozens of alternative calibers/cartridges. I would like to play around with 458SOCOM... 50Beowolf is interesting too.

I would look at a M1A before an AR10, but just personal choice...

Somewhere in the bowels of the government they know I own a Mossberg 500. They DON'T know about my other weapons, if any ;)

Dont want to turn this political, but I think the Gov't knows more than we think. You buy ammo, search the web for info, post on forums, etc. Sure, they may not know of ALL the guns I have that are unregistered, but I am sure they know about quite a few.

Thank you everyone. This is a great learning experience!!!! I'm definitely looking for a M4, not an AR-15. Sometimes it's just a matter of learning the right question to ask when you don't know anything at all. :)

I also really appreciate the links and suggestions. I have no plans to do anything with then other then something fun to shoot when friends are over, and piece of mind for Karen. I prefer to buy quality, but I have no interest in top of the line or combat preparation. I do not consider this to be a hunting rifle, or something that would even go out in the field other then to shoot at targets. I have much better choices for that.

I've read over and over that the Colt is the best deal for something under a grand. I question if I will need, or notice any of the features that you get with the more expensive rifles. I've noticed that they sort of package them to include certain features. In some of the forums, barrel twist is a huge thing and 1:9 is considered too much. I doubt I'll notice one way or another.

I am concerned about the front sight on some of them. I will put a scope on it and it seems if I have the front sight, the scope has to be up high to clear it. Some don't have the site on them at all, while others are very expensive to remove.

My wife and I always go to a range that rents the guns we're interested in to spend some time learning the differences. The shop/range we are members of has a good selection of rentals and knowledgeable folks to point out differences.

An M4 is still an AR-15. They are all AR-15's.

I think what you ment was you dont want an A2.

I know it can get confusing, and I think your best bet is to visit a local gun store and not a big chain outfit. If you want a scope, get one without a front sight. Most with the front sight, that sight doubles as the gas block, as there is a hole in the barrel there and it goes through the sight and down the gas tube to operate the action. So removing the sight, it would need replaced with a gas block.

I am not sold on "colt is the best". IMO, colt is only best at holding resale value. Dollar for dollar, you dont get more with colt, I think you get less because you are paying for the name.

Not picking on anyone or trying to start a war, but compare a deere to a kioti. Both make a fine piece of equipment with excellent quality. But feature for feature, one cost more. IMO, that is just like comparing colt to about anything else.

Apples to apples, colt is going to be more $$$.

Colt does not make a low-dollar AR. All of theirs have the things like dust cover, forward assist, and chromed barrel as standard.

So when looking at another brand, dont look at the entry level $600 guns, rather look at one that compares feature for feature. The colt LE6920 is typically $900-$1000 range. Many other brands with the same desirable features will be ~$750-800.

There are so many options out there to compare, and its hard to go wrong with any of them. Again, I would start by seeing what you have available locally. It could be easy for me to recommend a particular model of armalite, bushmaster, core 15, CMMG, rock river, windham, ruger, S&W, etc. But it would do no good if your dealers arent distributors. Unless you plan on buying one online and paying FFL transfer, which is a valid option as well.

One thing for sure, I can guarantee, which ever one you choose, and there are a lot of good choices, you and Karen are going to have a lot of fun with it.:) You might as well start stocking up on ammo and magazines now, as you are going to need them.
