Your gun sucks and you're holding it wrong.

I guess it is OK to use an AR in the primitive portion of the deer hunting season. It is all about holding it correctly.

Definitely a more upscale rifle. Piston instead of original direct impingement, upscale sights etc.

I've noticed that they sort of package them to include certain features. In some of the forums, barrel twist is a huge thing and 1:9 is considered too much. I doubt I'll notice one way or another.

I am concerned about the front sight on some of them. I will put a scope on it and it seems if I have the front sight, the scope has to be up high to clear it. Some don't have the site on them at all, while others are very expensive to remove.

1:9 is pretty much the standard twist rate for 5.56/.223 anymore in AR's.

If you are going to scope it get a flat top without the front sight. Burris, Leupold and others make permanent attachment and quick detach one piece scope mounts.

If you would like to also shoot it with either scope or open sights put a set of steel flip up sights like the Magpul MBUS Pro on the top rail. The front sight has to be steel if you are going to mount it on the gas block because it gets hot.

This is a Windham Weaponry's carbon fiber receiver AR with the Magpul MBUS pro steel flip up sights. Pics arn't that great as black is hard to get good detail.

I thought about the 6.5 Grendel version and really enjoyed reading about what it can do. The .308 is a proven powerhouse that I also thought about. Most of the others are so similar in performance to the 5.56/223 or .308 as to not be measurable. Others are not even close in performance, and the rest are not as easy to find ammo for.

I'm still leaning towards the 5.56 because of availability of ammo. I'm not thinking battlefield, or even home defense, it's more about giving Karen something to shoot and have fun with. Odds are very good that it will end up in my safe most of the time, and if something happens here, I'll grab my pistol first and go from there. We both carry, so it's going to be a pistol that comes out after the dogs do their thing. We have two Akita's that are very protective and on duty 24/7 protecting us.
