B2150 working

There we are. One big hole at the side of the rock which seems to just get bigger.

Well after lots of digging and then trying my theory of pulling into the hole I admitted defeat. I measured the rock and it is 6 foot long 5 foot high and 4 foot wide. Oh yes it is granite by the way. Well I think I will have to call in reinforcements when the weather gets better.

Well that's me up-to-date on my adventures in the tractor seat. I will keep you posted when I arrange for someone with a rock breaker attachment on a large machine to come and get rid of the rock.

Good to see you on the forum again. I figured you were keeping busy with the new tractor and backhoe. With all those Scottish rocks I am sure you will not run out of uses for your backhoe. Keep us up to date on the garage extension.

Glad to see you're enjoying your B2150. During all of the posts where you were debating the purchase of your B2150 with backhoe, I developed the "itch" to purchase a backhoe for my B2150. Right now it is still a small itch, but it seems to be growing.

I have passed though UK a couple of times since you purchased your B2150, but as we discussed earlier, you're located a little too far from where I passed through. I would've loved the opportunity to play with a backhoe on a B2150.

I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures. A colleague at work offered me a stick of explosive to dispose of the rock. He was being serious at the time! I declined politely /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif. The next suggestion was "feathers and wedges" which DaveNH mentioned in his post. I didn't take my colleagues suggestion seriously after his first one! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif What are they and how do they work? Is it possible to hire them? I must admit that I would like to get rid of this rock myself as I don't like being defeated.

I think they are refering to the old time method of drilling holes in a rock and then placing the feathers in the holes and then tapping the wedges down. The rock should split along the line of holes. I've never done it but have seen lots of rock that was split that way. It entails considerable work and skill with a single jack.

Tools required.
Rotary Hammer - I have a Bosch
5/8" SDS Carbide Tip bit
10 3/4" Feathers and Wedges
1 good size shedge hammer

I used a generator to get power to the rock and
my BX to move the pieces around.
Total time was under two hours.

I'm far from an expert but I will say that after
a couple of rocks like this, you start to learn
to "read the rock".

I'm always the last to know...but what is the difference between a "feather" and a "wedge?"

I also heard them called irons or shims.

BTW: I did not buy them from this place.
You can do MUCH better at a lot of other places.
