Folks, I'm brand new to the list and I'm shopping for my first tractor. My house is on a former egg farm of 6+ acres, 2 acres clear meadow/grass and the rest is treed (oak, ash, very little softwood) and abutting Rhode Island and Conneticut state forests. The terrain is fairly level, no steep hills or ravines. The remnants of barbed wire imbedded in the trees on the lot boundary suggests this land was used as pasture long ago. No boulders lying about, just plenty of rocks imbeded and sticking up a few inches above the soil (who know how deep they go). The loose rocks were used long ago for the stone walls.
I'm looking for a tractor to: mow the lawn, haul cut trees to yard for splitting/drying, dig up stumps and the smaller rocks, level out the "lawn" (fill in the hollows, cut away the humps), and eventually clear out the briar and saplings in the woods.
So far I've looked at Kubota and John Deere, and will check out New Holland. I'm not keen on the other brands, though Cub Cadet is possible as I have an old CC149 garden tractor that I'm happy with.
I think I'm going to need a 20-30 HP tractor to handle the FEL and backhoe. Also R4 tires, 4WD, Hydro Trans. Sound right? I've looked at the Kubota B7500, B2410, B2710 and JD 4115 and 4210. Between the two brands I like the Kubota B2710 and JD 4210, and am strongly leaning towards the Kubota due to the $3,000 savings.
